Q and A Shaving Tips

Is it better to use hot, cold, or warm water to shave?
Warm water is best for hydrating beard hair. Soaking in warm water softens hair and causes it to expand, making it 70 per cent easier to cut.

What is the best way to avoid razor burn?
If the skin is not properly prepared before shaving or if the blade on your razor is dull, you are more likely to end up with razor burn. Make sure to hydrate hair in warm water for up to three minutes and apply plenty of shave gel. Also, you may want to consider changing the blade on your razor at the first sign of dullness or discomfort.

Does shaving make your hair grow back thicker?
Scientists at Gillette have conducted extensive testing on the effects shaving has on both male and female hair growth, texture and colour. This testing has proven that shaving does not affect hair growth, colour, or texture. Shaving does, however, alter the tip shape or the regrown hair, which may initially change the way hair feels as it grows back. However, if hair is left to regrow completely, it will return to its former state.

In what direction should I shave to achieve the best shave?
Men's facial hair tends to grow in different directions. Start by shaving with light, gentle strokes with the grain. Then, if necessary, go against the grain for an even closer shave.

How do I avoid nicks and cuts, particularly above my upper lip?
The area above the upper lip is tricky for many men. To help avoid nicks and cuts, always leave it for last. Apply plenty of shave gel and allow this area to soak up as much lather as possible. When shaving, don't apply too much pressure. The Gillette Fusion ProGlide Precision Trimmer is really useful when shaving under the nose.

Is it okay to let my girlfriend or wife borrow my men's razor?
For both hygiene and performance, it's not a good idea to share your razor with your partner. Women have a much larger area to shave and you may find that after only a few shaves, you blade has dulled considerably; increasing the likelihood of nicks and cuts.

Style Name: Special PackSize: Pack of 3 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
With more blades than Edward Scissorhands, the Gillette Fusion razor does give me a smooth, clean shave. I have to admit that I only shave about twice a week - three times if I want to impress the boss (or Mrs Crookedmouth) - so this razor head has a fairly punishing routine dealing with several days worth of growth. It performs well enough. I have still to be convinced that the more blades a razor sports the better the shave but happy to admit that this is much smoother than a single or double blade razor. That said, I do still use an old, disposable two-blade to tidy up side burns - with a smaller blade head it's much more precise than a 5 bladed head.

Allegedly the Flexball thing is supposed to make this razor more maneouvrable than a "normal" razor that only hinges in one direction. The Flexball allows the head to pivot in two axes but, to be honest, it makes NO difference to my shave at all. I'm pretty sure that it's just a gimmick, introduced because the "We've got one more blade than you" arms race between Gillette and Wilkinson's Sword has reached a plateau the 5-blade head.

All in all it LOOKS pretty funky and space-age and it performs as well (but no better) than previous generations of Gillette Fusion razors.

Firstly, if you are perfectly happy with your existing razor then I would say stick with it, why bother changing something that is adequate for your needs? I wanted to try this razor out though, to see if it was as good as the manufacturers claim it to be. I didn’t like the standard Fusion ProGlide as I found it not as good as other manual razors on the market, and I will admit I was expecting to be underwhelmed by this new design with so called flexball technology.

So, I have gone a few days without a shave to see if this really works, after all my bristles were strong and thick and it is easy to check out how good a razor is going to work in such a condition, and much easier to see where they may have missed. You can wobble the razor head about with your fingers and see that the flexball moves, but it is a different thing on your face, where it moves according to the conditions of your face. I will admit that I thought there would be no way of telling if the ball actually worked unless you mounted a small camera onto the handle, but I did actually see it move when I was shaving my chin.

As I shave both my head and face I need a razor that can cope with both conditions, and I found that when it came to my head this was the best shave I have ever had, as this didn’t leave bits that I had to go back over again with more shaving. My face, neck and chin are nice and smooth, and I also found that this probably is the best that where my chin meets my neck I got off all the bristles in a couple of clean sweeps.

I like the idea of this razor, and find that it really does work, and for once instead of having to buy all new blade cartridges when a new design comes out, all you have to do is buy a new handle. In total then I would have to recommend this to others.

Style Name: Special PackSize: Pack of 9 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have been shaving for about 45 years now and have tried all the latest versions of razors.
Finally deciding I prefer the wet blade to the electric.
Why?
Simply because it gets a closer cut and is kinder to my face.
There is something to be said for the daily shave that sloughs off the dead skin cells along with the whiskers.
(and I don't mean the type that comes in tins and is fed to cats)

About one month ago I received, out of the blue a Gillette Proglide razor in a padded envelope.
No note no explanation but it was the latest one- or so I thought.
It is excellent and one of the best wet razors that I have used.
So when offered the free trial of this pack I jumped at the chance.
I was able to compare the old with the new so to speak.

The Gillette Fusion Proglide with Flexball Power Technology is better.
Much better.

The King is dead long live the King.

In other words technology moves on and we get closer and closer to the ultimate shave.
Gillette and their competitors keep tweaking away to get the best razor.
Gillette are in the lead by a long way.
Previously to the freebie Gillette I used the Aqua Glide by Wilkinson Sword which were excellent.
The Fusion ProGlide is better.
Simply put the flexball technology makes it far easier to follow the contours of your face and get to all the awkward angles.#
As an older man the big problem is often the lower neck area.
If you get nicks and cuts it always tends to be there.
The Powerball seems to be better in that area and so it gets a thumbs up.

A Niggle.
Now the price.
Whilst the price for the new razors is astronomical my pack clearly states that the price is £25.

I'm upgrading from the previous Fusion ProGlide model (with no roller ball). I noticed a VERY distinct difference right away compared to the old model so it takes some getting used to. It is a very different feel on your skin. I felt the precision of the shave had stepped up so much you could barely feel it on your skin and thus wasn't completely sure how much pressure to use. My brother tried one at the same time and we found the first few uses were quite sore compared to old models.

Now I've been using it for a good two weeks I can't say it gives a much better shave than its predecessor. I am very clean shaven and I still have to go over my face just as many times as the old model. On closer inspection of the blades between the two models they look completely the same, so it is just a matter of preference whether you enjoy the feel of the roller blade technology or not.

This one is definitely down to preference but worth a try if you need a new razor. I personally prefer its predecessor.

It's worth noting the razor on its own comes with two spare blades even though the box says one. It is still a better buy to get this pack with four spares.
