Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Recorded in 1960, Gillespiana was the attempt by Dizzy Gillespie's new pianist Lalo Schifrin to showcase all aspects of his leader's musical personality. He not only succeeded but in the process produced a masterpiece--one that still stands atop Gillespie's massive discography. Gillespie responds sublimely to all five movements, and there is also very impressive work from Leo Wright on alto and flute and Schifrin himself on piano, not to mention the magnificent studio orchestra. This scholarly and generous CD adds the Carnegie Hall Concert cut a few months later by virtually the same personnel--not quite in the same league, maybe, but still a more than welcome bonus. --Richard Palmer

5.0 out of 5 stars A n energetic classic 27 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the most treasured records in my collection. The first half, the Gillespiana suite, is brilliant big band jazz. Lalo Schiffrin's compositions are, as you would expect, superb and they have excitement and drive. The rhythm is a mixture of the latin style that Gillespie introduced and some more African beats. The latter is most evident on Africana which has all the raw energy of African music with the gloss and sheen of American jazz. Toccata is also a highlight with driving rhythm and startlingly energetic melody. Energy is something that the record as a whole has in surplus.

The second half, live at Carnegie Hall, is also exquisite. The Gillespie standard Tunisian fantasy is great and is a nicely different twist on versions I have heard before. Track 8 is the only slight irritation, with the skat singing rather annoying, but that is a personal preference being more a fan of instrumental music. However even this is performed extremely well, like the rest of the album.

The musicianship here is great and you would expect little else from Gillespie's orchestra. As a novice in the field of bee-bop and Dizzy Gillespie I think this album would make a great introduction. Also for the more knowledgable fan, a collection without certainly has a hole. I always feel Gillespie's legendary dry wit comes through in his music and this is true here. It isn't so much humour but a joyfullness that never fails to leave a smile on my face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gillespiana! with Lalo Schifrin arrangements 19 Nov 2001
By Michael St John - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This set from '60-61 might be the best album Dizzy recorded for the Verve label. GILLESPIANA is a suite written and arranged for Dizzy's big band, by Lalo Schifrin. The five movements take you on a world tour of exotic rhythms and sounds representing facets of Dizzy's musical personality. Schifrin's arrangements sound very fresh, not quite like how any of Dizzy's bands ever sounded before, and yet still sounding very much like Dizzy. The band is really up for this date, and Diz particularly hits a special zone.

About five months after the suite was recorded, most of the band assembled again for a March '61 concert in Carnegie Hall. Most of the tunes are familiar parts of Dizzy's book, but Schifrin's arrangements again give the pieces a little special lustre.

Some other more recent reissues may have overshadowed this CD (reissued in '93), but it is no mere minor curiosity. It's some of the best music I've heard by Diz, and should be part of any representative collection of his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diz + Lalo = Dizzying results 13 Mar 2013

I've been a fan of "Cuban Fire" by Stan Kenton for a few years now, but one thing has always bugged me--its lack of swing feeling. The music's complex and rhythmically exciting, to be sure, but still very earthbound. If you feel the same way, then you owe it to yourself to check out "Gillespiana," composed by Lalo Schifrin and featuring Dizzy and his early '60s big band. It swings Latin grooves like a monster! "Panamerica" and "Toccata" are especially hot. You can almost feel Dizzy's excitement at playing these songs; in fact, the whole ensemble sounds energized.

And I have even better news--this disc combines "Gillespiana" with the Carnegie Hall live album. There's nothing quite as powerful as "Toccata" here, but "Kush" and "Tunisian Fantasy" are well worth your time. In all, a great deal on great music! Highly recommended.

First heard this piece when I was in high school and snapped at the chance to get it again. It has improved with age just like a fine wine. Well worth your money.
