Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This isn't the first mix compilation by DJ and record company man Gilles Peterson and it's certainly not his best. Though it's on his own label he seems to have spent his best tunes elsewhere on albums such as Desert Island Discs and the Incredible Sound of Gilles Peterson. The artists he's chosen such as Edwin Starr, Roy Ayres, George Benson and Sarah Vaughan are certainly good but they don't offer the kind of exotic, rare magic that Peterson can summon up when he digs deep into his vast record stack. Though this is entitled Worldwide it's surprisingly American with a noticeable lack of the Brazilian, Japanese and African music that has made Gilles Petersen's name as a broad-minded spinner. It's also a largely retro collection save tracks from recent darlings of the music press Spacek, Kelis, Jill Scott and the relatively contemporary Young Disciples. Best look elsewhere.--Jake Barnes

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen with pleasure.........., 25 Aug 2000
My mate's been nagging me to listen to Gilles Peterson on the radio for ages. Trouble is, his show is on very late at night, and most of the time I completely forget that it is being broadcast.

However, this latest offering gives a excellent flavour of the kind of music that has catapulted Gilles Peterson into the limelight over the last few years. Most of the tracks on this album have a softer edge than the chosen selection on his other compilation 'INC-redible, the sound of', which itself is simply brilliant.

Spread over 2 CD's, the first one consists of a spicy fusion of funk and acid jazz beats, with the second CD slowing down the tempo somewhat with what can be described as upmarket lounge music. The majority of tracks will not have made it as commercial releases, but there are some exceptional highlights such as Ski's 'Life Changes', and Koop's 'Waltz for Koop'. In fact, it is very difficult to fault this album at all.

I would say this though - 'Worldwide' will not be to everyone's cup of tea, but if you are willing to try something different, the listening pleasure will be more than rewarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best mix album in the world.....ever!, 25 Mar 2003
This collection is even more amazing when you consider that at the time of release, many of the featured artists such as Jill Scott, Herbert, Koop, Zero 7 were all relative unknowns. Pepe Braddock: Deep Burnt is actually worth the album price alone.

An awesome downbeat mix with the quality control set somewhere around heaven!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A rhythmic fusion of everything good about soul music., 28 Jul 2000
By A Customer
Peterson's taste in music is too cool for most and anyone who appreciates raw, edgy, soulful sounds would kill for his record collection. This package has a bit of every thing from folky blues to drum n' bass and the only thing the tracks have in common is that they're all damn good. Like all classic recordings it justs gets better with every listen. Worldwide is very much a turkey-free zone and the kind of CD that will have your friends drooling over your stereo, asking where you got 'that' track from. Keep the faith and don't tell them. This is one secret that's too good to let out.
