Product Description

Product Description

Cuneiform records made some three thousand years ago are the basis for this essay on the ideas of death and the afterlife and the story of the flood which were current among the ancient peoples of the Tigro-Euphrates Valley. With the same careful scholarship shown in his previous volume, "The Babylonian Genesis," Heidel interprets the famous Gilgamesh Epic and other related Babylonian and Assyrian documents. He compares them with corresponding portions of the Old Testament in order to determine the inherent historical relationship of Hebrew and Mesopotamian ideas.

This book is wonderful it will have you questioning things in the old testament which you blindly believed. It presents you with information in a calm and unforceful way and leaves the conclusion up to you. This book is a must buy for anyboby interested in philosophy.

This book has given me so much information to further research and quantify as regards the history of Babylon, the origins of the 'big three' religions and the Egyptian take on trinity worship.

The stories presented are fragmented to say the least, and the interpretations provided give enough to go on to draw your own conclusions about the overlaps in the stories with our modern day explanations.

Referencing the deluge in ancient accounts as the common thread with our ancient recorded history shows that our religious history may not be so exclusive at all. Most of the stories are constructed from the Babylonian and Assyrian tablets that have survived, and I would recommend this book to anyone with a vague interest in hocus pocus mumbo jumbo modern day hoodwinkery religions.

It is also printed in a typeface like on an old typewriter and really feels like you are perusing an old document. Well presented, well written and and good points raised. A great book.

too academic for me 16 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I was looking for more comparisons, the chapter on death was boring. On the whole too many references and few opinions
