I must admit that I was a tad disappointed to read NME's review of this album, where their overly brief review awarded it an unimpressive 4 / 10 and, I feel, missed the point a bit. To my ears, this album is far from below average, and is one that I have played relatively extensively over the past 10-12 months.
While there are some similarities in style between Empire Of The Sun's Walking On A Dream and this album, this album has a much greater sense of consistency and does not begin to meander and lose the plot after the first four killer tracks. There can be a sense, at times, that a couple of tracks lack strong identity but in general this is a really good collection of melodic indie-pop songs. Personal favourites include Gilgamesh and Watching Me, Watching You; but each to their own, eh?
And let's face it, anyone who's prepared to call a song / album by the name "Gilgamesh"... can't be 2 stars (4/10) can they?
4 Stars: I like it - and love it in parts - and recommend to anyone looking for fairly light, not-overly complex, melodic pop tunes.
