Product Description

There is no gypsy and there is no cat, but there is a Gypsy & The Cat, an electronic duo who, instead of pumping out house beats and booty-quaking basslines, pen gorgeous mini epics of forlorn beauty and elegiac romanticism that, you can just tell, are about heartache and solitude, past girlfriends and future loss. Track Listing 1. Time to Wander 2. The Piper's Song 3. Jona Vark 4. Gilgamesh 5. Sight of a Tear 6. Human Desire 7. Parallel Universe 8. Breakaway 9. Watching me, Watching you 10.Running Romeo 11.A Perfect 2

5.0 out of 5 stars Australia is killing it musically! 17 Jan 2011
By Lynne
Format:Audio CD
These two are amazing! I love this album, especially Jona Vark and Til Tomorrow. It's very 80's and all that but I love it, his voice at times sounds a bit stone roses.

It's crazy how many good bands are coming out of Australia, and for those not living there (like myself), triple j is the way forward, without it wouldn't have found these amazing guys!

4.0 out of 5 stars 80s Revival that doest last. 1 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
Gilgamesh; is a true 80s homage album of soaring synths and falsetto and its gimic soon wears thin. I'm a big fan of concept albums; i think that they can bring new musical styles together but generally they work on a theme; Gilgamesh is all falsetto; and synths and it sounds great on the first few listens but loses its shine quickly and turns into audio smush. In the smush there are a few tracks that stand out in my ears and have a permanent place on my iPod; Piper's Song is oustanding a great introduction to the album place to start. Ultimately the similarity of the tracks is Gilgamesh's downfall; there isn't a unifying story to the album and there isn't a journey there is just a wall of similar sounds for 40 or so minutes.

I must admit that I was a tad disappointed to read NME's review of this album, where their overly brief review awarded it an unimpressive 4 / 10 and, I feel, missed the point a bit. To my ears, this album is far from below average, and is one that I have played relatively extensively over the past 10-12 months.

While there are some similarities in style between Empire Of The Sun's Walking On A Dream and this album, this album has a much greater sense of consistency and does not begin to meander and lose the plot after the first four killer tracks. There can be a sense, at times, that a couple of tracks lack strong identity but in general this is a really good collection of melodic indie-pop songs. Personal favourites include Gilgamesh and Watching Me, Watching You; but each to their own, eh?

And let's face it, anyone who's prepared to call a song / album by the name "Gilgamesh"... can't be 2 stars (4/10) can they?

4 Stars: I like it - and love it in parts - and recommend to anyone looking for fairly light, not-overly complex, melodic pop tunes.
