Book Description

4 Feb 2008 BBC Audio
Marcus Brigstocke stars as the lovable nitwit in this complete second radio series - which features David Mitchell and Catherine Tate. Giles Wemmbley Hogg is off round the world on another six adventures, as heard on BBC Radio 4. He experiences Tanzania, New Zealand, Cuba, Egypt, India and Germany. First, Giles goes on safari to darkest Africa to Save The Giraffe - even though it didn't really need saving before he arrived. In Germany, Giles goes in search of the world-famous Munich Oktoberfest. But where is it held? And when? Next stop, Cuba, and then it's time to walk like an Egyptian, as Giles attempts to twin Cairo with that other cradle of civilisation: Budleigh Salterton. Then it's a chance to tour India with the Durham Uni Cricket First Eleven and to join an Ashram in an attempt to find peace, enlightenment and a decent Kashmir sweater for his dad. And finally, it's a flight to New Zealand for the romantic trip of a lifetime to see the girl he still loves marry someone else.

One of lifes joys.... Giles is a wonderful creation. It's something of a mystery why the BBC hasn't released more of Giles' mis-adventures. I think the Germany trip is the highlight of this particular collection, where Giles discovers just how much pork one man can eat.... Highly recommended.

Great comedy from Marcus Brigstocke. Posh but somewhat dim upper-middle class ex-public school boy called Giles Wemmbley-Hogg ("Two Ms, two Gs") Goes Off to foreign lands creating havoc along the way. Clearly he means well but comparisons to his home town of Budleigh Salterton have the potential to create offense of international proportions!

Ok, so I like both Marcus Brigstocke, and his comic creation, Giles Wemmbley Hogg (two M's, two G's). I'm also a fan of the writing for this series which inludes the sublime Graeme Garden.
The bumbling, rather upper class but lower intellect GWH finds himself in all sorts of surreal situations, all with - to my taste - hilarious results. The episodes also stand repeated listenings - there are subleties that are easy to miss - and the production quality is excellent. Very funny indeed.
