As Carl Giles died a few years ago continuing to produce the annual must clearly be an increasingly difficult task. By taking a thematic approach the editors have succeeded in maintaining the freshness of these marvellous cartoons. The quality of source material helps. Giles could put so much detail into the simplest of cartoons. There is always something new to find, even in the most familiar of his works. Seeing his football cartoons and the career of Chalkie the teacher gives the opportunity to see the development, not only in Giles' work, but in our views of sport and education over a 50 year period. How much longer the editors can manage this task I don't know, but please let it be a few years yet.
