Quite how this version of the Mikado got onto Video, and then to DVD is really anyone's guess.I was given the video(which is now in a charity shop!) and hoped that maybe the DVD( sound quality at least) would be better. It seems(from the other reviews) that it's transfer to DVD has nothing to improve it.The sound quality, which I put down to my video being an old copy,is just as bad on the DVD.However that is not the main fault with this production. The costumes and sets are bizarre, the singing poor(and that is being generous) and the acting either non existent,or over the top.The whole cast never stays still for a moment, and is always"busy".It strikes me that the director(who has obviously NEVER seen a G& S production)was terrified of a lull in the proceedings,as the audience might get restless?
The only good thing to be said of this DVD is that it should be kept as an extreme example to other directors,on how NOT to put on G&S!
The old D'Oyly Carte company was crticised for being "old fashioned",but far better that, than this awful travesty.
"My object all sublime,
I shall achieve in time,
to let the punishment fit the crime,
the punishment fit the crime"
Some crime! Some Punishment!!
(Something involving hot oil I think?)
