Having seen the film on TV I looked for a home DVD version. The title was right, the cast was correct so I was pleased to order and receive - looking forward to viewing it at Christmas at the family get-together. Disappointment! The quality was poor and although the cast performed well, all was not as it should be.On the front cover it lists the cast, in particular Angela Lansbury. Where was she? It was a joy to see Patrica Routledge perform as only she can perform, but the film I had seen was quite different and starred Angela Lansbury in this role. I would still like to get the 'proper' version but don't seem to be able to track it down.

This is a stage play of Pirates of Penzance featuring Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, Rex Smith and Patricia Routledge recorded live at the Delacorte Theatre, in Central Park, which was produced by Joseph Papp for the Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival. It is NOT the movie which stars Angela Lansbury despite what the cover image shows - that is a printing error.

"Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous and comedic operatic tale of Frederic, a `slave to duty' pirate, and the lowly band of `orphaned' is captured in all its fun and glory in this never before release production of Pirates of Penzance. Recorded live at the Delacorte Theatre, in Central Park, which was produced by Joseph Papp for the Public Theatre/ New York Shakespeare Festival. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling, campy and libidinous Pirate King. Linda Ronstadt, making her theatrical debut, sings her way as the lovely and virginal Mabel; and Rex Smith is Federic, the young pirate who is bound to serve the Pirate King until his 21st birthday, which is days away, but being born on February 29th, Federic is a long way off from being released. Complications arise when Federic falls in love with Mabel and the high-spirited antics ensue. George Rose, playing Mabel's father, is hilariously pompous as `the very model of a modern Major-General.' The original cast offers the best in this Gilbert and Sullivan romp.

This joyous experience is the original Delacorte Theater production of 1980, in which Kevin Kline and company exploded onto the stage - and into theatrical history.

Forget the absence of Angela Lansbury - Patricia Routledge is far better. Forget the claim of its being the Broadway version - it isn't. Forget the criticism of its technical quality. No, it does not have the Technicolor brilliance of the film version. Remastered by Kultur from the only remaining and very poor quality video recording, it is certainly not up to today's standards, but NOT as bad as some suggest. And for sheer talent, energy, originality and delight, it is unbeatable,(although possibly not at this price!) a theatrical firework display, and one in which we can also enjoy the audience's delight at the pyrotechnics offered.

Joseph Papp set out to rescue this G&S from the weight of a century of English tradition and to bring back the freshness and fun of the original. Perhaps - and I speak as a Brit - only an American boot up the backside of this English whimsy could have succeeded. And succeed it does, brilliantly, hilariously, exquisitely.

A young Mr Kline, delectable in purple breeches, black top boots and slashed-to-the-waist white shirt, is a Pirate King to die for, (yes, okay, I'm in love!) - dominating the stage with both voice and presence, whilst Linda Ronstadt makes a demurely charming, and musically acrobatic Mabel. If not really up to the vocal demands of the role, Rex Smith is still an attractive, likeable, Frederic, with a nice gift for comedy. Patricia Routledge is superb, from the comical maid-of-all-work in the first scene of Act 1, to the lovesick older woman in the beautifully sung contralto "My love, without reflecting, oh do not be rejecting".

BEWARE THIS IS ACTUALLY A 1980 RELEASE VIDEO TRANSFERRED TO DVD IN 2004. FURTHERMORE THE SUBTITLES ARE IN DUTCH.
I think the VHS master had been much used as there was tracking interference on the screen, the picture quality was poor as was the sound.
The actual performance was good particularly Patricia Routledge whom was excellent but it would be better to buy the Video and save money.

I love this DVD. Recorded live one evening in Central Park - what it lacked from a pristine studio recording it more than made up for in atmosphere (the story all takes place out of doors after all) and the enthusiasm of the audience (bringing forth a couple of encores). Played with dead pan humour by Kevin Kline, with brilliance by Patricia Routledge (who almost stole the show) plus the wonderful voice of Linda Ronstadt it was pure entertainment. We loved every minute. Highly recommended.

I love this but...The sound is not great although it is worth struggling through this very poor, grainy, badly shot and washed out version for Patricia Routledge singing Ruth - the only reason for two stars. Kevin Kline is always great but the production is not a patch on the West End version with Tim Curry, Pamela Stephenson, George Cole and Michael Praed.
