Two outstanding performances that will please both those who like the traditional approach and those who like their G & S to be a little fresher. Recorded during live performance(s) which add extra atmosphere and enjoyment without the usual sacrifice of impaired visual or sound quality, they come in Dolby 5.1 and wide screen and look, and sound, superb. (Though the American version is only in stereo - English buyers and Americans with multi-region players would get better technical quality by buying the Australian version direct from Opera Australia)

The performances are superb, well up to the standard set by Opera Australia's Patience and subsequently continued with their Pirates. May we have lots more G & S from this source. The entire cast is superb, but I have to single out for special praise Anthony Warlow, who brilliantly plays the captain in Pinafore as a refined public school Englishman of the time and then, in complete contrast, a half-drunk Scots judge in Trial. The very end, where they combine the curtain calls for both operas, is a real treat, benefiting so much from the audience rapport that comes from the live performance.

I've got pretty well all the G&S that's been issued on DVD and the three new DVD's by Opera Australia (this, Pirates and Patience) are, in my opinion, head and shoulders above all the rest. Get all three - you can't go wrong!
