Product Description

CD Description

The complete recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic opera 'Patience'.
'Patience' was staged in 1881, and was a playful satire on the artistic 'aesthetic movement' of the time, and the many colourful poets and artists that comprised it. These include
Oscar Wilde (who famously toured the USA at the same time as the Opera in order to help audiences understand more fully what the satire was about), Algernon Charles Swinburne,Dante Gabriel Rossetti and James McNeill Whistler, among others.

Revelatory 9 Nov 2000
It seems to be fashionable to sneer in some circles at the collaboration of Gilbert, Sullivan and the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. But as recording makes abundantly clear, there is nothing stuffy, old fashioned or dull about them. This recording is, from first to last, a delight.

John Owen Edwards extracts from the score subtleties that were hitherto unsuspected. This is a very beautiful score - the lush, languid opening womens' chorus contrasting superbly with the vigorous dragoons. Edwards treats much of the score almost as bel canto, and it is astonishing buthow much of the humour is retained. It may seem heresy to say so, but he leaves Sargent and Godfrey trailing in his wake.

The soloists are wonderful. Mary Hegarty is a terrific Patience; a full, lusty milkmaid more akin to Moll Flanders than the twittery soubrettes of yore. Jill Pert is superb as ever as Lady Jane. Some found Simon Butteriss' Bunthorne overdetailed, but as this young man is making a name for himself along the lines of a Lytton or a Green, he commands attention. The ensembles are up to the exacting D'Oyly Carte standards.

On the whole this is a clear first choice. Many listeners may prefer to have the dialogue, in which case the Decca issue will suffice, but the higher musical values and the outstanding recording quality give this one the edge.

Patience rewarded 1 Jan 2010
This recording has always been difficult to find, and is not mentioned in the Penguin Guide or Gramophone, as far as I know. So it's good news to see that it is about to be reissued (announced for early 2010). As anyone who saw the Proms performance earlier in 2009 will know, Simon Butteriss and Donald Maxwell are great G and S performers - Butteriss as well is the only Bunthorne on any set who (not so very) subtly suggests an underlying reason why it is unlikely that this Oscar Wilde-type character will find a bride. The Patience is a lovely singer, touching in some sweet high notes, and there is a fine Lady Angela (Frances McCafferty), who outsings the still good if not Felicity Palmer-class Lady Jane). The only slightly weak singing comes from the Archibald, perhaps cast (following the libretto) for his insipidity. Like all the TER releases, the sound is excellent and the conducting lively; TER also add a song for the Duke cut from the published vocal score to make this the CD recording of Patience to go for (though the DVD with Derek Hammond Stroud and the late Anne Collins is even livelier as a performance if much thinner as a recording).

By M. Joyce TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Having reviewed the Mackerras and Sargent G&S "cycles", I thought that I would turn my attention to the series of recordings made by the "new" D'Oyly Carte Company. This has long since disbanded and the big difference between the "old" and the "new" D'Oyly Carte companies was that the casts for the latter varied from production to production and this is reflected in this series of recordings which, with one exception and a couple of "guest artists" drafted in, capture the casts of these productions.

I don't think that the company ever performed "Patience" on stage, although a number of the artists here have sung their roles with distinction elsewhere. Indeed, Simon Butteriss is arguably the Reginald Bunthorne de nos jours and very amusing he is here. Am I alone in thinking, however, that his voice as recorded here sounds more suited to West End musicals than to G&S? (This is certainly not the case "live", I hasten to add). Mary Hegarty is an excellent Patience, singing with tremendous verve; a pity, therefore, that she is partnered with the pallid Grosvenor of Henry Wickham, a perfectly pleasant singer who sounds as if he has never sung G&S before in his life. Jill Pert is her usual tower of strength in the leading contralto role, while another leading exponent of these roles, Frances McCafferty, is luxury casting as a rich-voiced Lady Angela. The three military men could scarcely be bettered, with Donald Maxwell a worthy successor to Donald Adams as the Colonel. John Owen Edwards conducts with considerable flair; indeed, orchestral sound and choral singing are very fine. Dialogue is not included, but otherwise this is as fine a modern recording of the work as you could wish for.
