Product Description

The most successful of their Savoy operas, The Mikado made fun of English bureaucracy, thinly disguised by its Japanese setting. Enjoying over 650 performances at the Savoy Theatre, this work remains their most frequently performed work, and has been translated into numerous languages HMS Pinafore was Gilbert & Sullivans first international hit, satirising the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority, and poking good-natured fun at the English obsession with social status. As with many of their operas, a surprise twist at the end of the story turned the drama on its head. Composed in a matter of weeks, Trial by Jury pokes humorous fun at the law and the legal profession, based on Gilberts own experiences as a barrister. The outrageous antics of the characters led to the work being the toast of London, and was a runaway success. Patience satirises the colourful poets of the aesthetic movement including Oscar Wilde, and also lampoons male vanity and chauvinism in the military. The story concerns two rival aesthetic poets, each of whom is in love with Patience, the village milkmaid.

I suppose that there was a degree of chauvinistic prejudice which initially discouraged me from buying this set from Opera Australia; after all, G&S is a quintessentially British brand and what right do these colonials have performing it in the first place? It was only when I saw a couple of clips on YouTube that I was finally persuaded to make my purchase.

All in all, I have no regrets and it is, of course, a tremendous bargain. Before going on to review the individual operas, there are some observations of a general nature I would like to make:

Good points: The excitement of a live recording; productions which are both broadly traditional and innovative; generally good singing and playing; some great performances; a real sense of ensemble (quite a few singers appear in more than one opera).

Bad points: A few "dud" performances; too many references that are either dated or specifically Australian; in the case of "The Gondoliers", the unnecessary rewriting/updating of many of the lyrics.

THE MIKADO (***): This was recorded in 1987 and is the weakest of the series. The production, by Christopher Renshaw, is an inventive and visually lovely one; I saw it years ago in its original incarnation performed by New Sadlers Wells Opera. The success of that particular production was largely due to the brilliant comic performances of Donald Adams, Nickolas Grace and Thomas Lawlor as the Mikado, Ko-Ko and Pooh-Bah; their Australian counterparts respectively are bland, try too hard and sing well (Gregory Yurisch has recorded Scarpia and Leporello) but strike the wrong comic attitudes. The Yum-Yum is excellent from every point of view, the Pitti-Sing game but too old and the Nanki-Poo acts amusingly and sings mediocrely.

Opera Australia do a very good G&S in general but by far the best performance in this box set is HMS Pinafore/Trial by Jury. In saying that the Mikado is not bad either but this performance is nearly 20yrs old and the jokes made at the expense of Australian politicians of the time are no longer as good as they would have been at the time. As would be expected, the picture quality is better in HMS Pinafore/Trial by Jury than the other, older recordings but by and large I felt this did not impact on my enjoyment of them. Very good value for what you get I would recommend it.

I bought this collection for my dad, he has been in the Bournemouth Gilbert and Sullivan Society for many years and has sung in all the shows. He was delighted with this collection as the shows are performed in the Sydney Opera House. He love the interpretation of the shows and although the words of the songs and stories are exactly the same he loved the stage settings, costumes and choregraphy which he found exciting and very refreshing. He is 86 now and I was so happy to buy him a present that he really enjoyed.

As yet, my wife and I have only viewed three of the operas in this set, namely The Mikado, Patience and Trial by jury. We have found them very enjoyable especially Patience. I always find it useful to have a copy of the text near by when listening to a G&S CD, but with this set the clear sub-titles at the bottom of the screen makes this unnecessary. And in any case, for the most part, the performers' diction is robust and clear.

I bought this as a present for my elderly father who had been looking for a particular Gilbert & Sullivan Opera that he had on video and that seems to be unavailable on DVD. I knew this set wasn't quite what he wanted but took a chance (half expecting him to say 'Oh no, that's not what I wanted at all'). It turns out that he loves it and hasn't stopped telling me about it's terrific quality. So...definitely a hit!

What can I say about production, voices, costumes and sets of Opera Australa's Gilbert & Sullivan 4 DVD set but FABULOUS. I hesitated as I am sure English purists may have done who believe only D'Oyly Carte can perform G&B but I admit to being spellbound by it all. Never have I seen Gondoliers so seat gripping I didn't want it to end.

You wouldn't get a seat for a single performance at the Sydney Opera House for the price of these amazing FIVE operettas.
If I have to nit-pick then Mikado did not quite have the same effect on me as my ancient (1950) D'Oyly Carte version.

We really liked viewing these DVD's, not for the truly traditionalist but we liked that. A fresh young production although recorded quite a while ago.
