Rarely has there been a more perfect D'Oyly Carte recording of a G&S operetta than this early stereo recording of HMS Pinafore.

The cast on this recording is the best overall captured on record, and it would be hard to imagine a better performance by specialists as this. This recording is notable for introducing John Reed to the G&S circuit, and he turns in a fabulous performance as the Ruler of the Queen's Navee. I think that Reed sounds at his best in his earlier recordings, as his portrayals were all balanced without the mannerisms that crept into his later performances. Jeffrey Skitch makes a firm, strong first-class Captain, who delivers marvellous timing, and relishes the part. Not only is he authoritative and commanding in his opening solo, but he tickles the bone when he delivers that big, big D--- in the second act. The two lovers, Thomas Round and Jean Hindmarsh, sing with romanticism. Gillian Knight makes an impressive D'Oyly Carte debut as Little Buttercup, and George Cook as the Boatswain is perfectly resonant. As for the minor cast, Donald Adams makes an extremely menacing Dick Deadeye, and he displays the qualities that made him such a beloved D'Oyly Carte stalwart - his comedy and his resonant voice.

This CD reissue is perhaps not very different from the previous CD, and I know that the technology has progressed since this recording was last remastered in 1984. However, the recording is well-remastered and transfers well to CD. I know that the CD booklet is nothing more than a reprint of the previous booklet but with a new cover, but it's a treat to see the original LP artwork in this reissue. I do wish the booklets were more detailed and better produced, though, and that he dialogue sections were put on separate tracks so as not to impinge on the music.

However, this is such a superb Pinafore that stands among the all-time finest D'Oyly Carte recordings ever made.

Despite the website showing nice track names, the download mp3 is just numbered tracks which is a nuisance to navigate if trying to use it as a learning aid.

I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan and this and the other three I've purchased so far are a real delight.A pleasant change from the more serious classical music I collect. Great robust and and clear sound, lovely memorable tunes and fine singers. Reasonable prices and the ease and effeciency of buying from Amazon has helped to expand my musical horizons.
