This is a very poignant and frightening novel. It charts the decline of the human mind, and shows the power that it can create left unchecked. Gilbert Pinfold goes on a cruise to Colombo, and is 'attacked' by voices and hallucinations, and the mind succumbs to powerful forces. The book illustrates the dilemma with mental health, you can appear quite normal, but in fact be very abnormal Evelyn Waugh writes very clearly and convincingly, not surprising seeing that Evelyn Waugh himself had suffered from a nervous breakdown. Again all the actions appear so feasible, and only an outsider can see that all is not quite right.
A very good read and certainly very though provoking .

Dull repetative story, self indulgent exercise, not a patch on his other novels.
