As a young child, Frederic had been apprenticed to a pirate by mistake when he should have been apprenticed to a pilot. Now, having reached his 21st year, Frederic's indentures are at last over and he happily leaves the service of the pirates. When Frederic meets the beautiful Mabel, one of the many daughters (or wards in Chancery) of Major-General Stanley, they fall in love and decide to marry. However, complications arise when the pirates decide to marry the rest of the Major-General's daughters, themselves - and Frederic's birthdate turns out to be not all it seems - Featuring the London Symphony Orchestra and the Ambrosian Opera Chorus. ABOUT THE DVD: This is a DVD release by UNIVERSAL PICTURES for the UK market (Region 2 PAL format - which will play on all standard DVD players in the UK and the rest of Europe - buyers outside of Europe will need a multi-region player in order to view this) - The operetta is presented in COLOUR and FULL SCREEN (4:3 Aspect Ratio) format and runs for 116 minutes - The DVD has ENGLISH audio with a choice of Dolby 2.0 Stereo, Dolby 5.1 Surround or DTS 5.1 Surround soundtracks (There are no Subtitles on the disc) - Also included with the DVD is the 27 page booklet Libretto for this production of 'The Pirates Of Penzance'.

Sad and dreary 28 Jan 2006
A few highlights brighten this pedestrian and inconsistent production. The music flowed and the theatrical sets were good. The introductory talks and short location film of the Penzance coastline fed nicely into the story. The modern Major General, old nurse and head policemen were brilliant with marvellous voices and diction. The American Pirate King sang well with good diction but in his dialogue battled with the English accent despite a valiant effort. However the chorus work was stilted with bad diction. When Gilbert and Sullivan's words can't be heard what is the point of watching? One expects a somewhat stylised performance in the mode of Gilbert and Sullivan, however this performance failed to flow. Some of the cast had stilted gestures and rather sing-song dialogue and in parts it appeared inadequately rehearsed. I eventually decided I was glad I had rented not bought the DVD so I wasn't stuck with it. In Act II I put it on as background music to the end and was glad to post it back.

Always a fan of G & S and especially the "Pirates of Penzance". I looked forward to this much advertised version, only to be disappointed. The main characters - Keith Michell as the Major General - Peter Allen as the Pirate King, and Paul Hudson as Sergant of Police - together gave very disappointing performances. Their on stage acting and line delivery being weak to say the least . Gillian Knight as Ruth was much stronger than her lack luster "leader". Janis Kelly was quite good as Mabel - her singing was strong and she portrayed good stage presence. However at no time did the production "take-off" for me. In truth I have enjoyed many so called amature productions much more. The chorous did all that was seemingly asked of them, but again - "no spark".
This production promised much but delivered little.
It would not convert many to the work of G & S.

Wooden Acting 27 April 2009
I know our concentration should be on the music and the singing and while this is well enough performed, the extremely wooden acting from all spoils the overall effect. Our Operatic Society is putting on this show next year and I certainly hope our performace will be better than this.

The dvd was a great joy to watch. The company is very good and the quality good too.The Australians stayed true to the authors but with some fresh zest.

Dreadful!
A cheap and tatty production. Poor singing, often out of tune, and the Pirate King was as camp as Christmas. Dreadful!
