Product Description

This compilation of some of the classic 'Overtures' from TER's critically acclaimed series of Gilbert and Sullivan recordings, needs little introduction. The G&S Operetta's are world-renowned popular classics, performed constantly in schools and Opera House's internationally.

This recording features both the D'Oyly Carte Opera Orchestra and The New Sadler's Wells Opera Orchestra also both internationally recognised and acclaimed ensembles.

The compilation is popular amongst both Gilbert And Sullivan collector's and those wishing for a high quality introduction to the work of one of the most acclaimed partnership's in musical theatre history. Once again these recordings were completed at Abbey Road Studios and produced by John Yap.

Ruddigore was first produced in 1887, amid some controversy. The work was revived and remodelled in 1921. Some of the tunes contained in the original overture were no longer in the new production, so the conductor Geoffrey Toye, made a new overture. Both overtures are included. The Overture do Ballo is one of Sullivan's few concert works, produced in 1870. The work falls into three sections. When it was published, Sullivan considerably pruned he middle section, which is the version we normally hear. However, the present recording is of the original, longer version; a fact nowhere mentioned is the booklet notes. The performances and recording are good, although both orchestras involved could do with more strings.

This is a great recording of these classic overtures. The instrumentalists play with great technique and the sound quality is better than most Gilbert and Sullivan CDs out there. Included on the disc is by far the best recording of The Mikado I have found anywhere. Several of the overtures on this album are played a bit faster than usual, which I don't mind but may bother some opera aficionados.
