Book Description

Gila Bend is a small town in Arizona, which is the essential definition of “the middle of nowhere”, and is where the story ends. The story begins on the other side of the globe, in Bhopal, India where three boys, all strangers to one another, barely survive the poisonous cloud of the Union Carbide plant explosion.

A midnight warning from a dying friend enables Sankara, the story’s main character, and his family of higher caste, to survive the night. Nevertheless, Sankara’s other family members ultimately perish from the poison’s effects, and he is left horribly scarred, blinded, and orphaned. From his window above, Sankara witnesses Nishad, an orphan of the streets, rescue little Abhay after his mother is trampled and killed by the horde of stampeding cattle and people.

Sifted by circumstances and luck, all three boys grow to adulthood in spite of their wounds and attend school in the U.S and Britain. Sankara eventually moves from London, UK to Phoenix, AZ to work. He is Americanized by his lovable and proud Mexican-American co-worker (nicked named Chi Chi after the famous golfer), who stubbornly defies his old age and Mexican stereotypes. Sankara’s heroic companion dog, Nigel enables him to live free and independently, and even saves him more than once.

Then all three Indian men become embroiled in two acts of terrorism, one that causes the death of hundreds of innocent people in America’s heartland, and the biological rampage that requires the American President to order the military destruction of America’s irreplaceable living treasures, the wildlife of Yellowstone. Sankara is arrested and charged with terrorism. Nishad is arrested in New Delhi. Sankara is ultimately sentenced to death.

To the rescue is an international cast of characters who form a venerable posse of modern vigilantes whose cowboy ethics, wry humor, and horse sense, ultimately triumph over the ignorance, bigotry, and bureaucratic evil that tarnishes both the American and Indian democracies. Forced to check its mighty military hand of justice, America pressures India to set aside her old wounds from Union Carbide and address the plight of her “untouchables”. Both countries ultimately reconcile and bond; as the truth emerges from the lips of a mysterious young girl, an untouchable who lives at an orphanage funded by Abhay’s wealth. The same girl Sankara had protected years prior from a savage beating from her oppressors; a girl who collected cattle manure to sell for fuel, just like Abhay’s mother.

The story is woven with rich and memorable characters that are embroiled in a compelling plot that moves amongst the most majestic and most despicable places across the globe. Fast paced and action-packed the reader is compelled by curiosity to finish the story in one or two seetings. A feel good ending that satisfies all the anxiety and empathy the reader will feel building throughout the novel.
