a joy to watch,

caught this film by accident and was entranced by it. nuanced and moving performances from film legends Anna Massey, Susannah York and others, and engaging playful turns from the two male leads whose portrayal of a friendship between men is one of the truest I have seen on film in a long time. The director uses London as a backdrop so effectively that its twilight and early morning face are almost a character in the film themselves.

An great example of modern indpendent british cinema. very subtle and intelligent humour. oringinal quirky and quintessentially british. as the other reviewer put, the setting really adds to the film, particularly if you're a londoner you can play the "ooh i've been there!" game. contains some elements of lost in translation in it's subtelty, and some nick hornby-esue observations on men, women and how they interact. there's some clips on youtube if you want to get a flavour, or get it from lovefilm if you don't wnaa shell out a tenner. it's new, fresh and you might like it as much as i did.

Obviously, a certain sense of family duty led me to sit down and watch this film, but by the end my interest in my cousins acting ability had been replaced by an interest in how he managed to get so many famous British dames to appear in a film with him. I guess they must have just liked the story: a film premised on two Gigolos competing to service older ladies has undoubted potential for comedy.
But while this could have been played completely for laughs, the film actually presents the comedy alongside the tragedy of Sacha's lifestyle. Really, this film is about loneliness and male relationships. It becomes apparent that Sacha isn't in it for the money, he needs the validation. Charming older ladies is his talent, and it's only when he's doing that that he's happy. Outside of business Sacha has no-one apart from Trevor, and vice versa. The film is about how the dynamic changes when they become adversaries instead of teammates. The famous dames play their roles to perfection (see the clips) but this film is actually much more than my cousin and a few famous names. Careful Trevor, you're showing me up.
