Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Siemens Gigaset A580 IP is a digital cordless phone that can be connected to make calls via two different methods. Firstly it will plug into any standard telephone line such as a BT line in the home, or secondly it can be configured to make VOIP calls via a SIP account.

N.B. This phone is not designed to plug into a PC and make calls via Skype

To make VOIP or IP calls over the internet with the Siemens Gigaset A580 IP it does not need to be connected to a PC. This is because the A580 IP works by registering the phone with an online SIP account and connecting straight into a broadband line.

In total the Siemens gigaset A580 IP can be registered to up to 6 different SIP accounts from different providers. Using the internet to make calls is a great way to save on money calling people all over the world. It is even possible to make worldwide calls for free when two users have Gigaset IP phones working via Gigaset.net.

The Siemens Gigaset A580 IP has the trademarked Siemens HDSP sound technology built in. This is what allows the phone to deliver exceptional sound quality and High Definition Sound Performance.

The A580 IP also has the Gigaset advanced handsfree facility so users can perform tasks whilst on the phone.

There is a 150 name and number phone book built into the Siemens Gigaset A580 IP handset so there is plenty of room to store contacts. So the LCD screen is easier to read it is backlit making it much brighter especially in dimly lit areas.

Caller display compatible means that the Siemens Gigaset A580 IP has the ability to show the incoming callers number, as well as store the details of the last 25 missed calls.

Also the Gigaset A580 IP has the Siemens Dect Eco mode which reduces power usage via lowering transmit strength on handsets closer to the base. This also helps to increase the standby and talk time of the handsets as well.

1 week usage review 12 Jan 2010
It is a basic unit, nothing posh so please remember it.
First look and impression is disappointing.
If you compare to any standard phone or mobile the plastic is really cheap.
After you put batteries and charge unit (you should format batteries 3 times min 10 hours each cycle) it starts looking better. Batteries (2 AAA 700 mha) last for 4 days with normal usage (30-60 min daily). But I expect it will be worse with a time.
I don't know why but all VOIP phones looks quite cheap and are really expensive if we compare them to dect phones.
Display, easy to read, shows some infos like time, signal strength, with yellow backlight.
Keypad - rubber with backlight.
Software: handset - like standard old Siemens mobile phone, quite fast and easy.
Base: access to all settings via internet, you have sometimes 2-3 sec lag between websites during setup, but nothing really major, internal website quite easy if you used to work with voip, if you are newbie you can really struggle, but manual is quite good and some VOIP providers are preloaded. You can set up it from handset too, but it's really easier to do it from browser.
My advise is don't try to set up to many things, just set up basic settings and that's all.
If you start switching to many things it can be only worse.....
I use 2 voip providers, 1 for external calls, second for incoming (I have telephone number set up for another country so people can call me like a local landline even I am abroad).
That what is really nice that you can set up specific voip provider for specific call, you can set up it temporary or permanent.
Quite a lot of settings which really help to tweak everything.
So base software is excellent.
Last issue: change base security code to prevent any security breach.
Sound: ring tone ok, loud and clear, maybe melodies are old stylish, but you can find something acceptable.
Volume and voice quality, excellent, loud, clear and very, very good.
I assume that some people have problems thanks poor voip provider, low bandwidth which is VERY important for voip phones or they mix and set up wrong voice codecs.
Alternatively they live in really loud environment.
Last info regarding Skype: skype use different voip protocol which isn't compatible with SIP protocols so this phone like all other SIP phones wont work.
To have Skype you need special phone which is designed for it.

Summary: Good VOIP phone with loads of adjustable settings (if you need), excellent sound.
4 stars as plastic looks really cheap, apart of this 5 stars.
But if you want to make calls and save money I strongly recommend this phone.
Basic phone, a little bit old stylish but it works perfect.
If you don't need colour display, loads of games and other useless stuff this is good choise to make and receive calls.

Avoid Firmware 02227 12 Feb 2011
By JayZ
I chose this as we have Gigaset DECT phones and are impressed by them. The unit offers a great feature list at a good price point (multiple VIP accounts mean that kids returning from Uni can have their own a/cs for example). Also it's compatible with a range of higher-spec Gigaset handsets, so if you want a belt clip or Bluetooth etc later, there's a solutio available.

So why only two stars? That's because firmware 02227 does not, as of 12 Feb 11, allow you to register a VOIP provider, so the unit does not work at all with VOIP for now!

Gigaset acknowledege this but offer no workaround:
'Regarding your query on no longer being able to configure your VoIP account after the recent firmware update, we inform you that the inconvenience has been reported by other users and it has been escalated to our Development Team. As soon as we received a response in regards to this matter, you will be contacted by e-mail.'

So, for now, if you've bought an A580IP, DO NOT upgrade to this firmware version. Instead try with the firmware supplied on the unit.

I will post a comment when this is resolved ... you might wish to avoid or delay buying in the mean time.

I've been dabbling with VoIP products for some time but many just get in the way of making a simple phone call, not so with this. Just plug it as the quick start sheet describes and it will replace your current DECT basestation. But once it's assigned an IP address from your broadband router and you log in to the web page on the base station it's very straightforward to add up to 6 of your own SIP providers which can all registered simultaneously. In practice you can have 1 PSTN call (old fashioned landline) and 2 broadband VoIP calls ongoing at the same time.

Setting up my Sipgate account as the default VoIP provider took 2 minutes to configure and make a call. Sipgates help site will generate a custom page with exactly the values you need to plug in to the web page for you account - couldn't be easier.

The customisation options are vast. I especially like that you can have incoming SIP calls from a specific provider directed to just one of the registered DECT handsets which is ideal if you're a homeworker and don't want the kids picking up work calls outside of the home office space. You can also choose the default outgoing provider on a per handset basis too.

I'm using a mixture of Gigaset and BT Homehub handsets, which work just fine although the phonebook copying and the ECO mode only works on the Siemens handsets. Any DECT handset that is GAP compatible (aren't they all?) can be registered and used.

Not yet had a chance to try the higher audio quality of the G.722 codec as nobody else I call has a phone system that supports it but even normal calls through VoIP are crystal clear.
