Quirky Comedy 14 April 2010
By underthethumb VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
I really enjoyed this quirky indie comedy about a bed salesman (played by Paul Dano) who meets a customer (Zooey Deschanel) and falls in love with her while he is trying to adopt a Chinese baby. There are also various side stories going on to add to the fun, some of which make no sense whatsoever to the film's plot and are left unexplained. There are no extras at all on the disc so it is a little disappointing that you don't find out anything extra about what they were trying to convey.

Zooey Deschanel plays her usual kookie girl that is supposed to turn the life of the male lead upside down; but this time Paul Dano is so focused on his own goals that she is left as the one looking for love.

A very enjoyable comedy.

I bought this film on the basis that anything Zooey Deschanel is in, is bound to be lovely, and indeed the relationship between the two leads is incredibly sweet and interesting.

However, the addition of the violent homeless man without any explanation of who he is or why he keeps on popping up throughout was too much for me to bear. I'm not one who delights in a perfect rounded ending, but when this film finished I was so confused that I was borderline angry at the film. I kept trying to figure out what it all meant or if there was some metaphor within it that went over my head, but two months later, I'm still completely clueless.

A dissapointing element to what could otherwise have been a really cool and quirky film.

I was quite surprised that I didn't like this film, Paul Dano is a great young actor, Zooey Deschanel is pretty hard not to like and I enjoy indie films. But `Gigantic' is a film which in reality has absolutely nothing going for it, the acting was ok, the direction was ok, and the script was just plain awful.
I usually like `slice of life' type of films where you as the viewer dip in and out of a characters life over the course of a few days or weeks, but for those type of films to work you have to have some form of connection or interest in the characters on-screen and where `Gigantic' fails is that both lead characters are so dull and uninteresting that fairly soon into the film you really don't care what happens next.
If you've not seen it I would opt for Miranda July's superb Me And You And Everyone We Know, Junebug or The Station Agent.
