Better than the majority at delivering muscular anger anthems, the Michigan quartet put out a hell of a racket. No fillers here, just quality mosh pit fare. There's not much to really distinguish them from perhaps 'Adema', Taproot meld together driving 'Pumpkins-esque' rhythms and 'Deftones' like fractures. Frontman Stephen Richards is prone, to a little welcome, wigging out and the staccato beats and beats are representative of the talents visible here.
Again it's not original and again it's not particularly emotional considering the amount of angst in the lyrics and perhaps it's altogether a little to clean. Yet the delivery and consistency carry it above the rest of the surly tattooed crowd.
'Again & Again' and 'Now' are prime examples of the quiet, loud, quieter then LOUDER school of song writing and again there is just a little something that means that it's no crap. If only all the bands in the Middle American mainstream market were this good, then people wouldn't be worried.
So what makes them any different? Firstly, i would answer this question by claiming that Taproot portray alot of strong, personal emotion within the Stephen Richard's confident yelling and screaching. All the guitar work throughout the 12 tracks is truely first class and, for some unknown reason, self-assured/semi-arrogant attitude also leaves me admiration, basically i believe them to be very cool!
Most tracks on 'Gift' have their own sense of greatness however the obvisous stand out track is the 24 hour repeatable, 'Again and again', which if you haven't heard by now you have most definately missed out, along with #6.'Believed' and the oddly catchy #10.'Dragged Down'.
The reason why i haven't given this debut is due to the fact that it took me quite awhile to get into each song and i believe that Taproot can only get better and better and eagerly await the band's inevitable 5-star follow up.
In simple, brief terms buy this album as it is an absolute 'Gift' amongst the usual, uninteresting Nu-Metal bands that forget about the anger and emotion behind such music. A must buy!
