Book Description

2 Mar 2000
Carl Granville is a would-be novelist who is beginning to think his writing career is going nowhere fast, when he is approached by the hottest editor in town and given a six figure sum to fictionalise a fifty-year-old diary. Sworn to secrecy and on a tight deadline, Carl is close to finishing when the editor is murdered ...and with hours Carl has been fingered as the killer. He's only got one person to turn to, his ex-lover Amanda. With an unknown demon on his tail he manages to get to Washington, but the demon has extraordinary resources and Amanda too is drawn into the nightmare. They have only one option - to track down the author of the original diary and the place where the events related in it took placeand the true identity of Gideon. But someone knows where they are headed and are certain they'll never get there. Told with spectacular pace, peopled with tough but vulnerable characters, Russell Andrews' first novel marks the debut of a bestselling name.

Amazon Review

Thriller readers are a difficult group to seduce: they've read all the key titles (and their numerous progeny) and are quick to recognise over-familiar material. So when a new premise appears, it's a cause for celebration. Andrews' publishers must have been pleased to receive this manuscript, for this is a unique and interesting plot which is handled in prose possessing a frictionless energy. When a writer, Carl Granville, is hired by a mysterious source to synthesise an old diary, articles and letters into fiction, he is bemused by the quarter of a million dollars he will be paid for this task. Needless to say, that price tag has a reason: the pseudonymous Gideon's book on which he is working has more than bestseller potential--it articulates a profound evil and a long disguised cover-up by a clandestine and powerful figure. And when people near to Carl begin to die, his apartment is ransacked and his computer stolen, he finds himself both suspected by the authorities and in danger from nameless sources. There are echoes of Grisham here, but when Andrews throws off his influences, he shows that he can really let rip with a fresh and invigorating piece, garnished with some notably nasty villains. --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down! 24 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
As with one of your other reviewers it was the cover that first caught my eye. The story itself did more than reinforce my decision to impulse buy. From start to finish I was hooked. You can feel the tension and anxiety and feel you are right there tagging along on the journey. I had a series of very late nights and early mornings with this as I simply couldn't put it down. The twists and turns are fantastic and it can't be long before someone thinks of turning it into a film. It's so good I have read it three times, something I have done with no other book. Look out for his second book, "Icarus". Not as good as this one but still well worth a read.

I buy books to read on the train on the way to work. Occasionally I will find a book that makes the journey enjoyable but with this book I couldn't wait to get on the train! It is well paced, exciting and keeps you guessing right to the surprising end. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb thriller 13 May 2000
Format:Paperback
I must agree with the rest of your reviewers. I found this book in Tescos & the cover intreged me. So I bought it & read it in 3 days. It normally takes me 7 days to read a 250 word Andrew Vachss novel & they are my favourites. Anyway, a thoroughly involving, twisting, mindblowing read. Go Buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Overated Thriller Falters 6 Dec 2001
Format:Paperback
After an unclear prologue the story seemed to get going to a compulsive hungry action thriller, however halfway through the book the powerful events and pace collapsed as the charecters became thin and the dialogue poor. Russell Andrews prooves he has a sound knowledge of U.S Politics and a good business head , however as a novelist in this book, to me he lacked an original voice and his humour was dreary and cheesy borrowed from such stalwarts in the field as Lawrence Sanders and Douglas Kennedy. This is nowhere near the high quality of Grisham or Patterson.
The story was to long with uneccecary deadwood . But at least it kept me hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gideon Russell Andrews 8 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
I have just finished reading this excellent book, I could happlily have made it a one sitting read but due to other committments I had to make it two. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good, well constructed, plot. It moves along at a really good pace and the characters are all very believable. An excellent, excellent read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner 4 Feb 2012
By Odious
Format:Paperback
Gideon is without a doubt one of the best thrillers that keeps you guessing till the end. The characters are well developed and while the dialogue is somewhat cheesey at times it is not without charm and is indeed necessary at times to balance the cold heatred nature of some of the characters. One in particular is The Closer, an assassin immersed to the neck in mystery with a more than satisfying twist towards the end. The prologue of the novel definitely causes the reader to continue to the end and the story itself begins in an almost abstract and surreal atmosphere akin to that of the twilight zone. The narration is clever and manipulating so it is never boring to read perhaps with the expection of the array of politics sewn around the last third of the story. All in all this is a great read that I fully recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to its cover...
