Format: Audio CD
A record of genuine beauty and languid charm, the High Llamas' "Gideon Gaye", seems unfairly forgotten, though its very obscurity perhaps adds to the sense of discovery one has in listening to it.
The influence of Brian Wilson circa "Pet Sounds" and "Smile" is evident, and this influence is superbly used, it must be said.
A consistency of mood is evoked, and it works superbly as a piece of music for its 48-minute duration. That's not to say certain tracks don't stand out, they do; "Checking In, Checking Out", "The Dutchman" and the absolutely glorious epic "Track Goes By", are all particularly sublime.
It goes without saying this album is heartily recommended; have no illusions, this is spellbinding stuff.

Sean O'Hagan, lead singer, songwriter and general head-honcho will probably hate me for saying it, but the spirit of the Beach Boys circa "Pet Sounds" infuses every moment of this glorious album. Perfect pop tinged with touches of 60's psychedelia, string arrangements to die for and, in "Checking In, Checking Out", Sean and his Llamas have created the most memorably infectious song of the nineties. I know they are (understandably) sick to death of the BB comparisons, especially as they have now moved on and widened their sonic canvas, but with Gideon Gaye, the High Llamas made a follow up to "Surf's Up" that Brian Wilson would be proud of. I had no intention of writing any reviews for this amazon site, but when I saw that no one had said a word about this woefully neglected album, I just had to have my say. And while you're at it, check out their other albums; never less than pure aural pleasure.
