Product Description

CD Description

Newly signed to Ape, Thomas Walsh of Pugwash is best known for his recent collaboration with Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy as The Duckworth Lewis Method, a duo and album which celebrates the great game of cricket. GIDDY is a compilation of Pugwash's finest material to date and includes 2 tracks from the forthcoming new album ELEVEN MODERN ANTIQUITIES schedule for release January 2010. All tracks handpicked by Ape headman Andy Partridge and Thomas have been remastered for this album. Their PURE brand of pop is reminisent of BEATLES, BEACH BOYS, XTC and THE KINKS. XTC'S DAVE GREGORY and ANDY PARTRIDGE put in guest appearances on some tracks. Thomas Walsh is that rare breed of British songwriter capable of writing that melodic gem with an instant hook. Having grown up on diet of ELO, BEATLES and The KINKS in Dublin his debut Irish only album Almond Tea in 1999 was released to high acclaim HOT PRESS even touting it as one of the TOP 30 album of the Millennium, ahead of such lumineries as Suede and Orbital. Pugwash have played numorous shows across Ireland supporting such heavyweights as Glen Tilbrook,, Cotton Mather, Jason Faulner (ex Jellyfish) and Martin Stephenson. They are soon to hit our shores at the end of this year and for a tour in 2010. PRESS/RADIO PROMOTION Features in UNCUT and WORD for October editions and a track on the WORD Covermount October 09. Reviews confirmed for Q, MOJO, WORD, UNCUT, CLASSIC ROCK, WIRE.Broadsheets - Independent, Times, Telegraph and Guardian. Plays on BBCR2, BBC6 Music and local regional stations. Podcasts, downloads, blogs and more on www.ape.uk.net and across the web. TRACKS: Apples / Its Nice To Be Nice / Song For You / Anyone Who Asks / Cluster Bomb / Sunrise Sunset / The Season of Flowers and Leaves / Mono Rail / My Genius / Finer Things In Life / Black Dog / Two Wrongs / Anchor

Most of you will have never heard of PUGWASH. This album, their first album to be released in the UK is a revelation. Thomas Walsh, the band's singer songwriter, a self confessed Jeff Lynne, Beatle fan has conjured up 13 tunes here that can easily be regarded as classics in their own right. There are influences here, The Beatles, ELO The Beache boys, even an oasis feel to a few of the harder tunes, but Thomas is no slouch. This ain't the Rutles. The ballads are beautiful, melodic and dare i say, uplifting. Anchor is beautiful and sounds like a familiar classic, Apples is great bouncy pop,Black dog creeps up on you, cluster bomb is wonderful and....well buy it yourself. I GUARENTEE A SPLENDID TIME FOR ALL.

Recently all over the airways and TV as one half of the acclaimed cricket loving duo The Duckworth Lewis Method (alongside Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon) this is Thomas Walsh's 'day job'. His band Pugwash have been crafting finely honed slices of Beatley/Beachboys goodness for nearly a decade now, but have yet to build their audience outside of Walsh's native Ireland.
Giddy cherry picks favourite tracks from the bands four albums to date and is released on Andy Partridge's (XTC) APE record label at the end of September. Previously only available as pricey imports the APE deal means that the rest of the world can finally catch up with Walsh and friends terrific music.
Think late period Beatles, Pet Sounds era Beachboys and XTC circa Oranges and Lemons/Skylarking and you won't go far wrong. Swirling opener 'Apples', the bouncy 'Nice To Be Nice' and 'Anyone Who Asks' are hook filled slices of prime jangle pop/rock whilst Noel Gallagher would kill to pen classic ballad 'The Finer Things In Life'.
But it's the quieter moments that really show off the songwriting class on show - 'Season Of Flowers & Leaves', 'Sunrise Sunset' and the wonderfully wry 'My Genius' offer more melody, erudite lyrics and fully realised arrangements than the likes of Oasis have managed in 15 years.
Add to the pop pot lashings of inventive vocal harmonies, humour, pathos, intelligence and giant choruses and you get the picture. Pugwash SHOULD be your new favourite band.

nice little album 16 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
I read about this album in one of the weekend paper reviews, so was tempted to buy it. I understood it is their debut album and what a lovely collection of music it is too. 'Giddy' really is as interesting as described. I like quirky and this is a lovely mix of instrumental and vocal harmonies with each track a little different in style from the other. I can hear traites of Beach Boys 'Smile', late Beatles and other musical influences, but put together, Giddy makes for an individual sound.
