I bought a set of the Gibson Games reprinting of these Woodland Happy Families cards just under four years ago having loved an original set owned by my late grandmother since at least thirty years ago. The images have all been faithfully duplicated from the original set, but on my grandmother's set the backing strip was coloured red, whereas on the Gibson Games version it is brown.

I have not found the quality of construction of these cards to be very resistant to shuffling and general wear and tear in use - they scuff quite easily at the edges, so either you need to handle them carefully or to enjoy them and resign yourself to replacing them when they wear out.

But the creative possibilities with these cards stemming from their pictures are wonderful. 'Happy Families' is rather a simple game that is suitable for teaching to very young children, but we soon found ourselves inventing two new card games of greater complexity inspired by the animal characters on these cards, and it is these rather than Happy Families itself that has made the cards so worthwhile for this family.

I would advise anyone who does purchase this set for children to exercise their imaginations by encouraging them to invent games of their own using the various woodland characters. This is a much richer educational purpose ultimately for these cards than spoon-feeding the same old Happy Families game to the letter of its rather simple rules.

My daughter (aged 4) loves this game so much. She will play the proper version or just make up stories with the pictures to inspire her. Easy to take with us anywhere, it is a useful toy to have. I think it is lovely.
