This is the english early music disc that I thought only existed in my head. Phantasm live this music as one, there's a total unanimity of purpose in their playing and flawless it .Musical lines flow and overlap one another in glorious counterpoint. The recording itself is rich and sonorous, the group captured in an appropriately old college chapel in Oxford. I know this disc has already won a Gramophone award, so I can only add to the praise it gathered. But the special attraction for me is that the playing and the music are spellbinding and transport back in time to another era.

I've heard an awful lot of viol consort CDs - and this must surely be one of the two or three very best ever. I know this is supposed to be a review but, faced with such utter perfection in every department - programming, playing, production, presentation - I just give up and instead urge you to buy! Worry Gibbons's anthems wouldn't work instrumentally? Well you'd be hard pressed to hear them sung as well as Phantasm play them here - same for the keyboard pieces. I'm off to get their other discs!

For those whose musical tastes embrace the viol consort repertoire, this is a very desirable disc. The music is great, the performers are first class, and the selection of pieces is generous and intelligently designed. As the booklet acknowledges, the controversial aspect of the publication is the inclusion of pieces transcribed from Gibbons' keyboard and vocal repertoires. Personally, I welcome that and have no problem with the idea. The only misgivings I have are with the tempi of some of the pieces. Try as I may, I can't quite accept the Lord of Salisbury's Pavan played that slowly. Even so, the disc deserves top marks.
