Book Description

5 April 2007
In Punta Arenas, Chile, in November 1998, Karl Bushby set out on one of the most remarkable journeys of modern times. His plan is as simple as it is extraordinary: to walk up the Americas, across the Bering Strait, through Asia, Russia and Europe, back through the Channel Tunnel and returning to Britain in 2011. It is a journey of remarkable endurance -- 20 miles a day, 3,000 miles a year, 36,000 miles in total. By the time Karl returns, he will have crossed four continents, twenty-five countries, a frozen sea, six deserts and seven mountain ranges. But more than that, unlike other similar expeditions, Karl is attempting it single-handed: no huge support teams, no large sponsorship deals, this is the inspiring true story of a man facing remarkable odds -- and winning.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth a read 10 April 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Not normally the type of book i read, but as the writer is still in the news and the story is on-going, it got my attention.
It turns out that im glad i did. the book has far more humour then i thought it would, some real laugh out loud moments, but the book was written from cut down daily notes so thats not suprising. What is easy to read and it soon grips the reader, is the sense of passion and comitment from the author. This really is a huge undertaking and to start it with no support or money just because it has never been done is so very rare these days.
To walk from the tip of chile to london, some trip!
it may just be worth a read to re-affirm your belief in the human race!
There may be a number of reasons for buying this book, whether going to south america or as an adventure read its sure to inspire. its intresting to note that this is part 1, the author is under arrest by the russians for crossing the bering straights where the this book leaves him.
I shall be reading part 2 in a few years i hope!

I am not a big reader and it is not often I buy a book. However, this was so good I have bought it twice!

The first one I bought and read was so good I did not shut up about it at work and that meant that when I finished there was a queue of people waiting to borrow it!

After a few months I still had not got it back as it was still going round the various people who wanted to read it so I decided to buy myself a new copy.

This is a unique and entertaining read. It is a true story that seems to roll all book genres in to one. There are elements of history, geography, suspense, thrill, romance, humour, and more.

What is perhaps most amazing is the generosity of the human race. Of course there are plenty of tales of less respectable human beings but there are some parts of the story that are so touching it will bring a tear to your eye.

I recommend this book to anyone even if you are not normally that much of a reader. I think this book holds my personal record for the fastest I have ever read a book because it is that engrossing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giant Steps 29 Sep 2006
Format:Paperback
If you enjoy reading travel books, then do not overlook this one. It is the story of one man's desire to prove himself by undertaking the ultimate challenge of walking around the world. It is a story of incredible commitment and endurance; pushing himself to his limits and beyond; but also told with admirable modesty and humour. With Karl we are able to explore other countries of which we may never experience in our lives and meet the people there; the majority of whom are only too happy to offer him their hospitality although they may be very poor themselves. This is life living on the edge and one is only too aware of how suddenly and easily it could all end. It is also the story of painful decisions, of love, of loneliness, of anger, of frustration and of happiness. It portrays the full range of human emotions and reading the book you can relate to the author's state of mind at the time. The book is well set out with an edited version of Karl's diary and missing parts explained by a mysterious author. There are also maps of each country, boxes explaining interesting facts and a few colour photographs.
