Product Description

From Amazon.com

One of the more woefully underappreciated blues artists of the last three decades, Taj Mahal has consistently made great records that combine his extensive knowledge of roots music with a refreshingly non-elitist sensibility. Giant Step/De Ole Folks At Home from 1969 was Taj's commercial high point, and it's easy to understand why. The first half of the album (originally released as a two-record set) features Taj and band blending rock, pop and blues on songs like "Take a Giant Step," "Give Your Woman What She Wants" and "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl." The second half is more laid-back and down-home, with Taj essaying solo renditions of "Fishing Blues," "Stagger Lee" and "Light Rain Blues" on banjo, harmonica and acoustic guitar. The most effortlessly enjoyable record of an effortlessly enjoyable career. --Dan Epstein

This cd is one of Mahal's better works. It contains his own works as well as blues standards,my favourites being Stagger Lee and Candy Man.The line up is the same as the debut album which I also recomend,Taj Mahal. His later work I found hit and miss.
So go ahead and buy

Contrast! 20 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
Ignore the review describing, 'De Ole Folks At Home' as "awful", it's great and shows that Taj Mahal is a champion of the history of blues music, not just out to make a quick buck! The contrast between the songs on 'Giant Step' and 'De Ole Folks At Home' works really well! The first is electric city blues and the second is country/delta blues, of the sort I'd love to hear... well anywhere really!!!

Hit and Miss 27 Mar 2010
By Alan
Format:Audio CD
A Recording very much of two halfs. Giant Step is with a band. There is a mixture of covers and Taj Mahal originals and is quite good with a profesional sound.
Giant Step is truly awful. It is a collection of traditional country blues and folk songs which would be OK but it sounds amateur and at times un-rehersed. I am all for some gritty realism but some of the songs are a joke - check out 'A little soulful tune' - and I am suprised the record company allowed their release. Most of it the songs sound the same and are quite boring.
