The tenor saxophonist, a native of North Carolina who later moved to Philadelphia, was 28 when he joined the Miles Davis ... Read more in Amazon's John Coltrane Store

Format: Audio CD
John Coltrane, Giant Steps, NOT2CD 391
John William Coltrane 1926 - 1967 the jazz saxophonist and composer was a pioneer of bebop and hard bop.He was prolific, organizing at least fifty recording sessions as a leader during his recording career, and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, notably with trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. This new 2 CD set comprises albums recorded in 1957, 58 & 1959 for the Prestige and Atlantic labels. CD1 comprises "Giant Steps" a 7 track, approx 37 minute working of John Coltrane compositions.

"Giant Steps" is a 1960 studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released on Atlantic Records."Giant Steps" was his second album to be recorded by the Atlantic label, and marked the first time that all of the pieces on a recording had been composed by him. Several pieces on this album went on to become jazz standards, such as "Naima", "Giant Steps", "Cousin Mary", "Countdown", and "Mr. P.C."

CD2 comprises an interesting mix of song book standards with track 3 being a John Coltrane original. The extensive working of "Lush Life" received critical praise at the time of release and remains a masterpiece in interpretation. The running time is approx 37 minutes.

The liner notes for this set are by regular Not Now Music writer Peter Gamble and he puts these 2 albums nicely into context for the listener. The packaging looks good with plenty of images and the inclusion of recording dates and personnel is always a plus. The sound quality is excellent throughout.
