HASH(0x9d062e64) out of 5 stars Outstanding! Interesting story and good science. 12 Feb. 2012
By Don - Published on Amazon.com

Giant Squid gets five stars for sure. Mary Cerullo's account of the search for the giant squid reads like a detective novel, but it is the true story of Smithsonian Zoologist Dr. Clyde Roper's decades-long quest to observe this mythical-sounding creature alive in its natural habitat. As an "ocean detective on the case" he hunts answers to progressively more perplexing questions, building suspense as the story moves along. Is there any truth to ancient stories of gigantic sea beasts? What kind of creature could take on a 70-ton whale? Where would a sperm whale and a giant squid meet? How do scientists solve mysteries? It's a lively read, interesting from beginning to end, yet packed with accurate information, not only about squids and whales, but also about the oceans themselves and the scientists who explore them. As I followed along with Clyde Roper, I found myself caught up in the adventure. Sometimes I laughed--at the whimsical drawings and some unusual pictures, like the one of Clyde stretched out on his back beside the carcass of a giant squid or the one where he finds himself waist deep in blood as he autopsies a sperm whale. The illustrations are spectacular. Many come from Dr. Roper's own collection and from the collections of his colleagues. While this book is obviously designed for fourth to eighth graders, I found it thoroughly captivating--and my school days are long behind me! I thoroughly recommend it for children and young people and for folks of any age who are curious about the sea and its creatures. It also provides a glimpse into the life and work--even the passion--of the scientists who study marine life and who care about the health of our oceans. Besides, it's a great read.

HASH(0x9d31a2b8) out of 5 stars Exciting Sea Science 30 Jan. 2012
By Bruce Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Giant Squid is an exciting book: part scientific exploration, and part biography. Both the science and the biography are handled with excitement. You can feel the whole-hearted enthusiastic life of scientist, and co-author, Clyde Roper's 40 years as a squid hunter.
So little is known about the giant squid - the sea monster of legend - because it lives almost a mile down in lightless icy waters. 50 or 60 feet in length including its two long feeding tentacles, its size is hard to imagine. Unfortunately this book never shows a simple scale diagram for reference; say a small sidebar with a sperm whale, a squid, a schoolbus and a man. And in fact, although you would expect the historic drawings to be exagerrated, so is the one modern illustration of a fight between a sperm whale and a overly large squid.
The book is attractively designed with bright colors, overlaid images and backgrounds and explanatory notes placed in the image instead of as a caption.
There is an excellent index, a good bibliography with up to date books for youngsters, a very short glossary and web links. The web links have a disclaimer that they are appropriate and correct at the time of printing. The book should be using web citations which are easier to type in for the reader, and maintain a permanent archive of the web site, even if it moves, or goes offline.
The book's lively style, fascinating scientific facts and attractive layout make this a must for any child curious about life under the ocean.

HASH(0x9d31a30c) out of 5 stars Giant Squid searching for a sea monster 1 July 2012
By cheryl s. oakes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Mamma and Daddy, please let your children grow up to be scientists! This is just the type of book our boys would have enjoyed reading as children. Even so, when I put it on the coffee table this week, no one, all adults mind you, have been able to walk by it without picking it up. This book is like a dinner conversation, a fact dropped, an illustration, a photograph , and then on page twelve, we meet Clyde Roper the Squid Hunter. The author, Mary Cerullo, introduces us to Clyde with a vignette about his childhood and how he turned those questions into a life long passion of study. Oh, by the way, Clyde turned his passion into a very successful career. This book is just the sort of book that provides the reader with more opportunities for questions and to begin a scientific journey of their own. Just what is that little sea creature in the tide pool? Why did that little worm under all the leaf litter in the garden inch away from the sunlight? Plus this book will leave adult reading guides with the opportunity to ask guiding questions about the reader's passion and possible hobbies and careers! Please consider growing up to be a scientist, it is never too late! If you enjoyed this book like I did be sure to check out several other scientific books by Mary Cerullo. Shipwrecks: Exploring Sunken Cities Beneath the Sea and Life Under Ice. You and your young readers will be knowledgeable and glad you did.
