More About the Author

Brian Wildsmith was raised in the mining village of Penistone, near Sheffield. He won a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art, where he studied for three years, then spent his National Service teaching music at the Royal Military School of Music. After his time in the Army, he became an art master, but soon gave up teaching to pursue his life-long ambition of becoming a painter.

He believes that children like good illustrations and well-designed books and are much better able to understand "difficult" art than some adults acknowledge. He says: "Picture books give an opportunity for a marriage between painting and illustrating, and the challenge of designing each page is very stimulating. I believe that beautiful picture books of the right kind are vitally important in subconsciously forming a child's visual appreciation, which will bear fruit later in life."

Brian's work is both provocative and stimulating and he now enjoys a world-wide reputation as one of the greatest living children's illustrators. He is particularly popular in the USA, Europe and Japan. In Leningrad he was responsible for all the sets and some of the costumes for the film The Blue Bird, based on Maurice Maeterlinck's famous play, and in 1996, as a celebration of Brian's special relationship with Japan, Oxford University Press published Katie and the Dream-Eater written by Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado of the Japanese Imperial Family. Brian has published over 70 books with OUP over his career.

Brian's hobbies include music, cricket (he has played League cricket for Yorkshire and won cricket colours for University College, London), and tennis. He is married with four children and now lives in the South of France.

Beautiful illustrations from Brian Wildsmith in this fabulous little book. Our little girl keeps it in bed with her at night.

Milet Mini Picture Dictionary is a much better and more comprehensive book 17 April 2015

I wanted to get some Vietnamese books for my son and realized quickly that a lot of the books available on Amazon are not written by a Vietnamese person. Brian Wildsmith's interpretation of "farm animals" seems to be a lazy, short interpretation. Animals in the Vietnamese language start with "con." "Con" meo is cat, but in this book is just "meo." Not a book I want my son learning from if I want him to know the complete translation from Vietnamese to English or vice versa. Milet Mini Picture Dictionary is a much better and more comprehensive book. This is going back as a return along as the others I purchased as a gift. Save you time and money. Sorry for the negative review, but I don't want others to be dooped that this is a good book for kids - this is coming from a Vietnamese American parent.

Fun Word Book! My Baby Loves It! 2 July 2006
By Jennifer Juday - Published on
Format: Board book Verified Purchase
BRIAN WILDSMITH'S FARM ANIMALS has been a fun addition to our baby's book collection.

While I own and like his ABC book, the illustrations in BRIAN WILDSMITH'S FARM ANIMALS are more inspired. Each page feels colorful and active. The animals often have interesting expressions on their faces. The word for each animal sound is printed on the page, usually twice, and Wildmsith has fun with that. Often one is printed bolder for a louder sound. On the Pigs page, most pigs, of course, say oink. One pig is sleeping and so his sound is zzzz.

My baby just loves the pictures. He pulls this one out of the basket, opens it up, and giggles at the cow.

Something I especially like about the book is the relationships between the animals. Often thee is more than one animal on the page, sometimes multiples of the same type (several pigs, a mama duck with baby ducks). A cat and mouse appear on the same page. There is a two page spread with a hen, chicks and a rooster. It is another cute to go past just reading the labels to talk about the pictures.

I considered the bilingual Spanish-English edition, but am actually just as happy I got this edition of BRIAN WILDSMITH'S FARM ANIMALS. The pictures are so good that nothing more is needed for a fun reading experience.
