Synopsis
John Vandermark has taken in a struggling writer, Sebastian St. Germain who overstays his welcome. When John discovers that Sebastian has simply been using him, he turns the tables on his young tenant in an effort to make him work off his rent debt. When Sebastian dies accidentally in the process, John tries to make it up to him by helping him get his book published posthumously. When the book is published, John can't help but take credit for the work of genius... and Sebastian comes back to haunt him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Film of the Year To Date, 11 Jan 2009
I suppose that this is scant praise since it's only January, but I seriously doubt if a better film is going to come along any time soon!

Alan Cumming directs and stars in this superb study of paranoia and madness with David Boreanz giving him a good run for his money as his co-star, plus a spectacular supporting cast putting in a top-notch performance.

The film delves into the madness of one John Vandermark (Cumming), a music teacher and would-be opera composer, and his relationship with a possible hustler, Sebastian St. Germain (Boreanz), and [SPOILER ALERT!] it is strongly possible that neither Sebastian and many of the other characters who flit through Vandermark's life during the film are figments of his paranoid imagination.

Alan Cumming plays the lead role in the style of grand masters of the 'mad' genres like Colin Clive, and the whole film is beautifully shot to create a suitably operatic opulence with a colour palette like an oil painting by Van Eyck.

I would give it ten stars if I could.

1.0 out of 5 stars Alan Cumming once again undermines a poorly deserved reputation..., 28 Dec 2008
The story offered so much scope which was wasted on long, over-the-top, appallingly acted speeches from Alan Cumming. Of course, I'm sure Cumming deserves his broadway reputation - but as a film actor - he is an over-inflated egotist who's best performance to date remains Nightcrawler in X2. Boreanz on the other hand is oustandingly understated and natural as Sebastian - something of a hustler artist who unwittingly becomes the victim of Cummings bitterness and self-loathing. Whilst there was so much that could have been done with this story - it has been filmed in such a manner that suggests it might best be served in theatre. Is it worth a watch? Not on film. Cummings direction is haphazard and his acting is gratuitous. I'm not entirely sure he intends himself to be serious - but at best he is laughable in the lead. Henry Thomas provides a passable support performance, though his character is ill-defined and lacks any pivotable role within the story. Overall - forget it. A wasted 90 minutes...

1.0 out of 5 stars Trash And Made No Sense., 1 Dec 2008
By Ms. J. F. Gilby "Film Lover" (bexhill, uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I rented this out for my sister as she likes David Boreanaz and sounded good on the back cover. But when we watched it, I grew bored very quickly. It's about a obessive man living in this Victorian like house, getting annoyed about his dream man having his way with his money and women so he gets his revenge by tourrting him while trying to tell him that he has written a brilliant story and wanted to publish it so he can get the money back for him. In a way, it could have been good if it didn't good all freaky and made no sense. The talents of Alan Cumming (a madman to think all this up!) and Boreanaz are wasted by a bad script, stupid ending and odd camera angles. Trashy and boring, don't bother seeing it but if you like mind-crap story then it's for you but not for me.
