Product Description

Product Description

Two years after Monolake s Silence , Robert Henke is back with a new Monolake album entitled Ghosts . Dark and colourful, with haunting and deep excursions into magic worlds of sound and grooves, held together by a fragmentary story as part of the artwork that indicates a continuation of themes present on Silence . Precisely crafted earthshaking beats, rough dirty noises, wide lush soundscapes and little sonic creatures inhabiting a fascinating planet in which a lot of things go badly wrong and nothing is taken for granted. Music that augments reality when listening to whilst commuting, music to get lost in when experienced loud in a club. There is nothing minimal in that music, it is bass heavy and full of detail. Ghosts is released on Robert Henke s own label Imbalance Computer Music. CD version comes in luxury digipack.

Monolake, aka Robert Henke, released his seventh album `Silence' as part of a trilogy some 2 years ago. Monolake is back with the second instalment, `Ghosts'.

There is never any nostalgia with Monolake's music, Henke is always trying to be innovative and futuristic. The opening title track tells you all you need to know about Henke's mindset for `Ghosts', an ice-cold tech-stepper, metallic breakbeats attacking your ears over a dark bassline. `Taku' is a shadowy menace, starting with what sounds like metallic bouncing Baoding balls which suddenly develop a life of their own. Snitches, glitches, creaks, whirring, whistling sounds all interacting over a pulsing beat.

The punchy tech-step cuts keep coming at you with precision engineered grace, until the middle of the album unleashes my favourite track `Existence of time'. A burst of electric distortion gets your heart pumping, before a clipped breakbeat and pounding fizzy bassline gets you moving. The track continually shifts through irregular tonal ranges, the electric distortion used to great effect, Henke uses space brilliantly to create a tight and tense spectacle. `Phenomenon' might not be quite so muscular, but it still manages to ramps up the tension even more.

`Ghosts' seems to have been influenced by late 90's jungle, especially the tech-step pioneered by the likes of Source Direct, Matrix, Optical and others. Some of the beats and use of space and rhythms remind me of Photek's legendary cuts such as `Ni Ten Ichi Ryu'. Imagine Monolake and Photek squaring up, what a record that would be!

5.0 out of 5 stars Continuation of a grand journey 23 April 2012

I have become a big fan of Monolake, and consider any release by him a "day one" purchase. Every new album pushes the boundaries further out into what electronic music is, and what message it conveys to the listener. Here we have another foray into a world of complex rhythms, eerie soundscapes, and invented, processed sounds that feel cold, almost metallic on their own, but brought together take the listener on a warm sonic exploration.

I've read up on the techniques that Robert Henke uses to create the sounds that feature prominently on his albums, and the man is nothing short of a modern day renaissance figure in the world of electronic music production. What appear at first to be unforgiving, sterile synthesizers, algorithms, and waveforms become something much more organic. His skills at inventing new ways of creating and warping sound are truly amazing, and always come together to create a very fulfilling listening experience on each Monolake album.

Kind of break beat, super chill, atmospheric techno with lots of Detroit influence. My second favorite album from Monolakeoso far.

Monolake at his best, ever expanding, unfolding. Nothing scary about this one.
A gift from one of the creators of Ableton Live. Enjoy the gift as it moves through you.
