Amazon.co.uk Review

Ghostbusters:

Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black.

Ghostbusters II:

Much less fun than its predecessor, this 1989 sequel starts off on a bleak note by telling us our heroes from Ghostbusters have been on the skids for five years and Bill Murray's lead character never did hook up with Sigourney Weaver's lovely symphony-musician character. What's more, she has a kid by somebody else. Everybody's on an uphill climb, and Ghostbusters II never soars the way the first film did, despite having the same director, Ivan Reitman (Dave, Kindergarten Cop). The lame plot finds the boys attempting to prevent a disaster on New York City caused by too many bad vibes in the Big Apple. Yikes! Fortunately, screenwriters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have penned enough good one-liners to keep Murray busy, and if the ghostly special effects no longer surprise as they did in Ghostbusters, they're at least inventive.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

I love GHOSTBUSTERS. It's one of the best films to come out of the 80s and i already had the original DVD release of this and it's inferior sequel on DVD. When i heard this gift set was coming out i waited in anticiapation for it's release only to find that you are much better off sticking to original releases. First off, half the special features are missing from the first films dvd and the second film has two inferior animated episodes slapped on the disc to make up for having no special features at all. The other bad thing about this gift set and probably the worst is the picture quality of the transfers. The first movie is so overly enhanced that it actually makes the film look dated. The effects in it are over coloured and grain is highly visible in nearly every shot. The second films transfer is somewhat better than that of the first but it seems to have high amounts of colour slapped on the picture which give the film a colour bled look. My honest opinion is to stay away from this box set and stick to the first dvds. Even the aspect ratio is altered on the first GHOSTBUSTERS film, it was originaly 2.351 and has been altered to a 2.401 ratio cutting off some of the picture from the top and bottom of the screen. GHOSTBUSTERS fans, please avoid this at all costs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Such a shame the BD format is so poor, with noise on the screen displayed by a grainy effect. I expected a clear and detailed format, look at other reviews of BD format and avoid if you can, why pay all that money for BD when the DVD format is virtually the same apart from a few extras on BD. One of the best films of the 80's genre with proton packs, slime jet packs and special effects that still look good now. With a good serving of action, a pinch of comedy and a dash of romance all makes up a good serving of fun for most ages. If you're not a sci-fi fan then this isn't for you with ghost chases, catches and supernatural goings on, all fictional but harmless fun. These two helpings of the film franchise were a hit and sales are looking good for BD release (avoid). The first being the most memorable from slimmer, to GODS and Demon dogs to a giant marsh mellow man, to the second helping of an Evil talking painting bent on taking over the world using supernatural abilities to control a loyal subject and tries to become human again via the body of Sygorney Weavers(Aliens, Copycat) child. Not forgetting the stream of ooze under the big apple and oh and not forgetting a statue of liberty coming alive to do battle with the Evil Lord of darkness. Yes, all a little far-fetched but the music, special effects and the corny acting delivered by an up-coming cast with the screenplay written by Dan Aykroyd (My Step Mom's an Alien, The Great Outdoors) and Harold Ramis (Knocked Up, Stripes), Bill Murray (Meatballs, Stripes), Annie Potts (TV's "Designing Women"), and Rick Moranis (Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Spaceballs). Both these films for a 12yr old boy were amazing, first Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, E.T then these, watch them, love them. Try the game too if your' a gamer (PS3) or whatever format you prefer. Caught the tail end of this on TV and thought I would buy it. Definitely highly recommended! I hadn't seen this since I was about eight years old and seeing it now I'm in my twenties I now understand the jokes! Just buy it. I was still a bit scared watching the second one with the big guy out of the painting, but it's more funny. I am telling you, they don't make films like this any more. Quality!
