This was transmitted in two parts in England in 2006 and was one of the television highlights of the year.

The basic plot is the re-appearance of a British submarine that was lost and sunk in World War 2, the only survivor is recruited by the admiralty to attempt to discover what happened to the rest of the crew and how the submarine resurfaced. After boarding the sub the investigation team begin to take on characteristics of the original crew and their ultra secret mission, to destroy a top secret target in Russia and set sail to complete this task that was set in motion 65 years previously.

The drama is a mix of a ghost story coupled with science fiction and is very reminiscent of Sapphire and Steel in dealing with the past pushing through into the present, the idea that the submarine's original crew cannot settle until the last survivor's soul joins them is quite disturbing and spooky.

David Jason has proved on many occasions that he is a talented straight actor and not just known for comedy and I would go so far as to say that this is his best ever straight performance in a drama, he is sensational.
David Jason himself suggested this be made into a drama after reading the novel that it is based upon and convinced a production company to make it and he was very surprised when they asked him to play the lead and what a great choice it was too.

In short this is a wonderful drama and well worth a look.

David Jason is the only survivor on a submarine that was sunk during the second world war, although he can not remember what happened. In 1981 when the apparently same submarine, is discovered in perfect working order, it is decided to hold an investigation using a modern day crew, by taking it back out and retracing its last known route. David Jason and the submarine's builder are invited along in an advisory capacity.

Events during the journey, resemble the unfortunate mishaps of the previous voyage, and even some of the crew start behaving in a similar reckless manner to their predecessors. Are the events in the ship just illusions? and is it 1943 again or still 1981? who is it that they are about to engage with?

David Jason must quickly sought out what is reality and what is not, as his memory concerning the previous trip begins to the return. If his theory is correct, can he stop an even much bigger disaster than originally happened in 1943, and at what price??

David Jason, as always, in marvelous in this. Great entertainment and a very fine film.

David Jason plays this part so well and is a good change from his usual comedy roles. The story unfolds well and holds the attention fully.

Excellent use of the inevitably claustrophbic submarine interiors add greatly to the drama. There never was incidentally a real S-class submarine as named, and the exterior views all show an ex-American or possibly German boat rather than an old Royal Navy boat. More importantly, however, the principal characters all come across well and David Jason is well supported by an able cast.

David Jason does himself proud in this quite freaky underwater adventure. As the characters slowly change your left gripped wondering what is going to happen and who will live and who won't. I won't say much as to not spoil it for you but definitely worth a watch if you like the slightly spooky mystery, not for action lovers. I did take off one star for the ending which is good but not aa good as the rest of it.

This reminds me of another film made around the same time, 1408. In both films, a man is trapped in a confined space which seems to have a mind of its own and has to confront his past. 1408 is the better film, with a far superior soundtrack. Ghost Boat is but a poor man's 1408 BUT that is a compliment. Ok, GB has a televisual pace, I wouldn't have minded if it had slowed down a bit at times. Oftentimes, the dialog was clunky ITV drama style, and the camerawork was sometimes poor. Effects are also sometimes dodgy. I'm not sure that Walkman was 1981 vintage, either. I think it was a later model. All of these flaws are ITV issues. And yet, it's very good if you forgive it a few things. Satisfying as a submarine and supernatural thriller combined, I didn't want it to end. People might think that this sort of thing is all cobblers, but maybe they haven't heard of the ghosts of flight 401. The initial British response to finding a supposedly lost submarine is somewhat nonsensical, more nonsensical than the supernatural, in my view. Given that this is only three pounds thirty nine pence at present, you could do far worse.

We bought the DVD of this and watched it last night, and it was the best thing we have seen for a very long time,I only wish they could show more films like that on TV,instead of reality shows or repeats or soaps even,David Jason is also underused as an actor,Frost is good but its shown too much so its time they gave him a rest now,and created a new character for him,...............

Having not watched tv for months due to being on this blasted computer, David Jason has reminded me of how good tv can be... I couldn't bear to miss a moment of this excellent film, and am so glad I had the foresight to record it...
