5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky but apt; an amazing soundtrack, 18 Nov 2001
By Mr. Peter Cooper (Louth, Lincolnshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly, this is probably the most curious soundtrack I've ever heard. It starts off with Indian movie music, moves to juvenile rap, then wanders into blues and ragtime territory, before ending with the bittersweet piano theme played at the end of the movie.

The jazz/blues/ragtime tunes aren't standards by any means, but they're excellent tunes none-the-less. Some of the controversial matter of the film is also dealt with on the soundtrack in 'C-h-i-c-k-e-n Spells Chicken' by the McGee Bros.

You'll be glad to learn that the main tune from the album Enid bought from Seymour is here.. 'Devil Got My Woman' by Skip James. Sadly, the punk tune playing while she was in her room is missing from this soundtrack, but if you want to find it elsewhere, it was 'What Do I Get' by The Buzzcocks.

Much like the movie, this soundtrack is interesting, quirky, and a powerful reminder of how bland our 'exciting' society can really be.

4.0 out of 5 stars There are no other soundtracks like this..., 14 Aug 2006
By John P. Galantini "ziggy_played_guitar" (Southampton) - See all my reviews

I am finding myself playing this album over and over and have only had it for a few days. It's been the soundtrack to my weekend.
It's really a compilation of seymour's records.
Favourites are Devil got my woman (obviously), Scalding hot coffee rag and C-H-I-C-K-E-N spells Chicken.
This is a great LP for escape to a similar style of songwriting and recording, perfect with a few beers.
Some of the stuff on this record is very rare and whilst the quality of some of the tracks is in places, questionable, given some of these numbers' age, this is thankfully overlooked.
I didn't however appreciate the 'Graduation Rap', however short this may be, and 'Cotton Picking Blues' is most definately worth skipping!
Aside from those two, this album is a retro treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks, 24 April 2006
If you liked the film, and loved the old records Seymour played, then you will be in heaven with this album. It has all the main songs from the film, as well as a few extra that fit in with the others. Skip James was the highlight for me (as it was in the film), although I personally would have preferred the 'ribbon in my hair' song Enid plays to the deliberately cringe-inducing 'Graduation Rap' and Blueshammer song.
