2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Follow-up to Dark Hollow, 30 Nov 2008
By Captain EO "No. 7" (Cardiff, Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
Having thoroughly enjoyed my first Brian Keene novel "Dark Hollow" I was looking forward to read what came next & I thought the whole Hallowe'en Haunted Attraction plot would make for a fun book but it turned out to be a wasted opportunity.

Firstly, the book just never really gets going. There's too many repeat-occurences whereby evil consumes it's victims in the same manner & the "climax" takes no more than a few pages and it's all over. Keene has a tiresome knack of ensuring that each and every character he writes about has a "deep, dark secret", even two young kids in this book have thir own demons & by the time I'd got to that point I'd realised that turning the original novel into a series was a bad move. Some books and indeed movies lend themselves to a sequel, some don't. I guess the knack is knowing when to go for it or not but in this case the residents of LeHorn's Hollow should have been left to rest in peace.

Not the worst horror novel I've ever read but don't be fooled by anyone telling you that Brian Keene is the next Stephen King, Richard Laymon, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deeper into the Labyrinth, 10 Sep 2008
By Smokey (Scotland) - See all my reviews
OK. Well if your a Keene fan you'll probably already know this is a kinda follow up to Dark Hollow. If you not a fan it can be read as a stand alone but I'd recommend picking Dark Hollow up first anyway.

I though this book was great. I finished it in two days and for all you Keene fans you who haven't read it it has a lot of the Labyrinth mythos in it. There is also a few charctors that pop up from previous books and a bit of further info on what happened to a few charactors so your gona love it.

I would have gave this book five stars and if you love Keene you probably will too. The only reason I gave it 4 was because as a stand alone novel I didn't think it was as good as some of his other work.

Fan or not your gona love it anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars KEENE ON AUTO PILOT, 11 Oct 2009
By S. W. Marlow (breamore, hampshire, england) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a follow up to the superior dark hollow.Once again something evil lurks in leborns hollow, the tension slowley builds to a decent climax. The pacing is quick and his writing is as always snappy, but the book seems rushed.Keene is a great writer but this is just not up to his usual high standard.Still enjoyable just not great.

This book serves as a follow up to Keene's Dark Hollow (which although not essential, it's probably best to read that first). Read more
