Alexander `Drift' Garrity drifted into Two Springs looking for off season work riding the grub line. It felt like he was looking for something or someone but we didn't know what or who until late on. Only that he was trying to make sense of his bitterness following a tough early life that included a spell in a Philadelphia orphanage.
But despite feeling unsettled Alex was a likeable character who came to the aid of others in difficult situations and demonstrated frailties such as being gullible enough to allow others to take advantage of him and of not always finding the right words to soothe those around him.
The ghost town belles were Melissa and Isabella who along with their father Mad Dungaree Dan were the only inhabitants of Highgrade Pocket an otherwise abandoned mining camp.
Mad Dungaree Dan got his sobriquet from protecting his teenage daughters from the unwanted attentions of others, apparently shooting dead some of those that came too close. His stiflingly protective attitude and their ghost town home meant that he and his daughters led an isolated existence and the sisters had grown up unaccustomed to human contact.
Garrity found work at the nearby Box V ranch owned by Big Dutch Kiliaen Van Dam and quickly became acquainted with his daughter Rebecca much to the anger of gunfighter and ranch foreman Zachary Emmett who had matrimonial ambitions of his own with Rebecca, the sole heir to her father's estate, so that one day he could enjoy all the wealth and influence that her father then enjoyed.
The Box V ranch was losing stock to rustlers and Emmett hatched a plan that with luck could resolve two or three issues very much to his liking ....
A nicely-paced, entertaining read from start to finish, with some great character interaction.

An old fashioned western thriller 6 May 2008
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Drift Garrity is a cowboy - something not nearly as glorious as it seems. In "Ghost Town Belles" he determines to unravel the mysteries of his past that made him who he is and it brings him into the attention of an over-protective father, vicious range bosses, all of which lead Drift to dirty tricks, accusations, fights for his very life. Published in large print for easy reading for the vision-impaired, "Ghost Town Belles" is highly recommended as an old fashioned western thriller for fans everywhere, and something that all fiction libraries to consider.
