2.0 out of 5 stars Wetter than a fish's bathing costume. 24 July 2014
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
It’s a pretty unadventurous title that matches the content of the film. Directed by Steve Beck and starring Gabriel Byrne, Desmond Harrington, Ron Eldard and Julianna Margulies, plot finds a salvage crew discovering a long lost passenger liner out in the remote Bering Sea. With the laws of the sea stating that they can keep what they find, they are delighted to find gold on board. But it’s not long before strange things start to happen.

It starts of real well with a bloody and gruesome prelude, the production design is super and everything is in place for a chiller out there in the foggy waters. Unfortunately what we actually get is a predictable series of clichés cribbed from better movies of the past, none of which capable of eliciting a genuine scare. The makers think that having a bombastic techno score accompanying the dramatic moments will make them appear more shocking. It doesn’t, while the cast are ill served by direction and writing.

Horror 101 for beginners. 3/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Pay The Ferryman! 6 Sep 2006
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
A group of salvagers are given the chance to set their sights on the Antonia Graza which disappeared over forty years ago. They eventually find the ship (in a pretty spectacular way) and go aboard. The past is present and the present is disturbing (to say the least). Intercut with scenes to explain the goings-on aboard the ship before it vanished this is a strong film and rates as one of my all time favourites. Many years ago I saw a film called Deathship and after seeing Ghost Ship I set about tracing Deathship on VHS (it is unlikely to be ever on DVD) and it still had it's moments. Ghost Ship isn't perfect but it is very close from my POV. It does contain gore but I don't feel a film needs gore to be successful. Another classic for me is The Fog (1979) which has so little gore but so much atmosphere that it works. Great film!

A lot of horror fans don't think too highly of this film, but I quite enjoyed my time on the Ghost Ship. Maybe there's nothing too original or ground-breaking about the type of horror it has to offer, but that doesn't mean it's not effective and entertaining. Certainly, believability is a weakness in a few spots, and I'm still trying to figure out how a couple of "facts" could have been even remotely possible, but the film does create an eerie atmosphere and doesn't mind spilling a little blood in pursuit of its ends.
I think I can safely say that the opening scene of the movie is rather unforgettable, and I greatly admire the effect the moviemakers were going for here. Rarely does a movie purport to take out untold scores of people with one swift blow, and it is most unfortunate that a lack of commitment to this potentially extraordinary scene sets in motion the very doubts and misgivings some viewers have of the real meat of the story. The method of mass execution used in this first scene is pretty hard to accept scientifically, but the real problem comes in the form of some very obvious mannequins lying among the "dead." The filmmakers try to salvage the scene by having the victims take a few moments to figure out that they are quite dead, and that works for me; unfortunately, they take this too far and end up making what should be a glorious bloodbath look a little silly.
The real story here concerns the crew of a salvage boat hired to salvage a mysterious old ship that a pilot claims to have spotted in the Bering Sea. What they find is an Italian ocean liner missing for forty years, but the great riches they discover onboard lead not to the paradise on earth they fantasize about but rather its exact opposite.

5.0 out of 5 stars atmospheric and totally enjoyable 31 May 2007
I watched this film, expecting it to be a typical teen slasher movie that seems to overload the blockbusters coming out these days, but i was pleasantly surprised. This has a great cast, seeing gritty performances from the ever impressing Alex dimitriades, and Desmond harrington, but all the cast bring a level down to earth approach to this bizzarre idea for a film. awsome sets on the ship give it a real eerie feel, and the more times i watch it there is more i seem to have missed. Very subtle twists, not overly gory, (appart from the first scene!) and a really enjoyable film, definatley worth a watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turn the surround sound up 28 Oct 2003
The plot may be a bit far fetched and some of the 'Ghost Fodder' actors behave like those on the original 'Alien' film but the Set design, VERY atmospheric background sound and a unique gore sequence at the beginning highlight the fact that a lot of attention to detail has gone into this. The addition of 'Katie' into the story as a 'guide' was a nice touch and gets my vote for the best actress alongside Gabriel Byrne's best actor. The extras on the DVD reveal some of the plot and design secrets although trying to unravel Katie's 'Twist Puzzle' to find out more about the Antonia Graza was a bit long winded.
It is a film that I have watched again and again and always notice something new !

2.0 out of 5 stars Good effects, but an unimpressive story 20 Oct 2003
The special effects in this film are good - if not a little too gory, but they are not sufficient to mask the fact that the story should either have had a few more twists, or been made into an episode of a 20 minute programme.
The best actor, in my opinion, was the little girl who plays the part of 'Katie'.
If you love guts and gore, go for it, but if you want to watch a good horror, go get another film.
