I had read some really great things about this book in various papers and magazines - quotes from which make up the blurb.
However, I was disappointed. There were too many similies, metaphors and other literary devices designed to enhance the language of the work, evoke images, create atmosphere etc which some of them did ( her acknowledgement of Seamus Heaney's 'Bog Queen' proves that she attempted to follow in the footsteps of a master). Most of the time, though, they just got in the way of the actual story which, when you got down to it, was relatively simple although interesting enough in itself to keep me reading, where otherwise I would have given up.
I have never read any of Clark's work before but have heard great things about her and am determined not to be put off by this novel. Recommended for holiday reading.
