Based on a novel by Barbara Cartland, A Ghost in Monte Carlo is an undemanding period romp packed full of twists and turns. The perfect cinematic equivalent of Cartland's literary style, the film is a glossy, star-filled but ultimately shallow exercise. Lysette Anthony is the wide-eyed innocent Mistral, released from her convent upbringing into the care of her Aunt Emilie (Sarah Miles). On arriving in glamorous Monte Carlo, she immediately strikes up a relationship with a dashing young lord and sets out to experience her newfound freedom. Matters take an unexpected, darker turn as Mistral finds herself caught up in the plotting of her aunt and in increasing danger.
The performances range from Anthony's passable purity to a ludicrously over-the-top turn from Miles. The much-vaunted all-star casting amounts to a series of brief cameos from the likes of Oliver Reed, Joanna Lumley, Lewis Collins and Gareth Hunt--presumably at the request of executive producer Lord Lew Grade. It's fun for what it is but only as long as you leave any critical sensibilities on hold.
On the DVD:A Ghost in Monte Carlo is essentially a video release transferred directly to DVD. The sound is digitally remastered and there is a very poor interactive menu to guide you through the various chapters but no extras. --Phil Udell

Exciting and exhilarating modern Gainsborough classic!,

This was another Gainsborough classic from the four magnificent Lew Grade Productions. (others included; 'A Hazard of Hearts', 'Duel of Hearts' and 'The Lady and the Highwayman' - all these big pictures are extremely hard to come by now) Whoever says that Barbara Cartland novels are simply sweet romance has not seen this! Full of mystery, murder and plots that would appeal to anyone! As always with the modern Gainsborough collection - includes a galaxy of stars with, among others; Christopher Plummer, Sarah Miles, Ron Moody and Oliver Reed! Marcus Gilbert makes a super hero in this, unlike the many actors used in these parts that are too 'boyish' and nauseatingly conceited, Gilbert provides much chemistry and presence, and enough youth and virility, but with an air of reliable maturity that is much needed in these types of roles. Whilst Lysette Anthony (Sarah Brightman look-a-like) may appear at times a little 'amateurish' in her acting, one can not take away the fact that at aged almost thirty in this, she plays a very convincing eighteen year-old! Another fabulous and lavish production from the Lew Grade Company that should have gone on and on... Five Stars!

Romance at its best,

Barbara Cartland was the true Mistress of the romantic novel, and this is a wonderful dramatisation of one of her best books. You can hiss at the baddie, faint with the heroine, and swoon over the sheer masculine gorgeousness that is Marcus Gilbert in the hero's role. Buy it!!

A small problem with it...,

The ONLY problem with this DVD is that the blurb on the back is in Dutch (I think). And the DVD seems to auto default to playing the dutch subtitles too.
But the film is in English and as long as you're not fussy with a Dutch cover, it's all good. The movie is rather old and you can see that in the DVD but it's still good enough to watch.
