5.0 out of 5 stars The Laughing Man returns... 31 Aug 2005
This superb anime series continues with episodes 17-20 and like previous releases never disappoints. More closely resembling the original manga from creator Shirow Masamune than the film, the humour and style shows through. There are many anime/manga releases out there, many of which are of dubious quality, but this series has yet to put a foot wrong. All four episodes are excellent, but the final episode on the DVD "Re-View" stands out, as Section 9 continue on the trail of the Laughing Man, and ends with an unexpected cliffhanger which will leave you waiting for Volume 6.

The first episode on this volume features the Major and Aramaki going to London and Aramaki gets caught in a hostage situation when visiting an old friend who seeks his help. This episode features bumbling thiefs, corruption in the Police and a cameo by the BBC, fortunately evidence is found to put the crooks away.

In the next episode a Chinese foreign minister has been allowed to visit a war memorial but a death treat is issued against him. It's up to Section 9 to find out who it is and stop them, the episode features more backstory for Aramaki as it involves one of his old war comrades and what lengths they would go to for revenge.

Episode 19 is about "Blindfold Ivan"(Russian Mafia), a group who kidnap and kill people for their body parts to sell on the black market. While there is some truth to this stuff happening in real life as people disappear everyday across the globe.

The next ep is about Togusa going it alone with new information to investigate the laughing man more, this leads him to an expermintal drug and those who want to cover it up. This episode ends with a great clifhanger making you yearn for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Episodes 17 to 20 3 April 2007
By T. R. Alexander TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Volume five of Stand Alone Complex begins with Chief Aramaki and Major Kusanagi on a trip to London for a conference but events spiral out of control when, while visiting an old friend Aramaki is caught up with a pair of thieves and held hostage. This is a better episode than I thought it was going to be and gives a nice portrait of Aramaki as he must deal with the situation he finds himself in with no backup. Episode 18 sees Section 9 protecting a foreign dignitary visiting a war memorial. This episode again heavily involves Aramaki and delves brings to light some of his back-story. Episode 19 focuses on a series of mass kidnappings that has included the daughter of an important official. The final episode of this volume sees Togusa return to the Laughing Man case where his investigation into the theft of seemingly unimportant records leads to serious consequences. All the episodes of this volume are action packed and the final one has a brilliant cliff-hanger.
