Book Description

9 Mar 2010
The Roman scholar Pliny the Younger was one of the first to write about ghost hunting: 2,000 years later the hunt still goes on. For all the thousands of hours spent by investigators in cold, dark houses, ghosts remain elusive and unproven. This book sets out to be a practical guide to ghost hunting. Examining cases from the distant past and the present day, "Ghost Hunting: A Survivor's Guide" asks if it is possible to find the truth in this age-old quest. A detailed history of the three major paranormal societies is complemented by advise on which one to join, and when. If you have ever wondered how to organise your own ghost hunt, the list of essential equipment and step-by-step guide to choosing your ideal spooky location is essential reading.

Ghost Hunting A survivor's guide provides a useful introduction for readers new to the subject of 'things that go bump in the night', while ghost hunting fans will find practical tips they can use in their next investigation. The book provides an overview of the history of the subject, looks at some of the modern day ghost hunting societies such as the Society for Psychical Research and the Ghost Club and also debates what do we actually mean by the term 'ghosts' The main part of the book then describes how to go about finding ghosts for yourself, including how to organise an investigation, the challenges of different types of haunted locations and the equipment you will need to coax out an elusive spirit. Throughout the book there are references to John Fraser's own ghost hunting experiencess in haunted houses. These include locations such as Ham House, Charlton House, the Clerkenwell House of Detention, Woodchester Mansion and Sandwood Bay and these personal accounts vividly bring the subject to life. An informative and lively book.

This book is an ideal introduction for anyone interested in the practical side of ghost hunting, whether as a serious effort to investigate this fascinating subject, for personal interest as an absorbing hobby, or even simply to satisfy curiosity as to exactly what it is that `ghost hunters' get up to, what equipment they use (and sometimes probably shouldn't use), the different approaches to investigating ghosts, and so on. Especially valuable for UK readers is the look at the UK's 3 main groups, comparing them and enabling the budding ghost hunter to choose the most suitable group(s) to join. The author is a true expert in his field and his expertise is apparent on every page.

But this is not just a book for newcomers. This reviewer has been involved in the subject for a quarter of a century and still found this to be a highly rewarding read. It really helps sometimes to be able to take a step back from the trees to get a good, clear look at the wood, and this book gives a very solid overview of its subject matter.

All in all, this is a very level-headed and engagingly written book, packed full of useful practical information, and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghost Hunting from the trenches 2 Jan 2012

A great book by somebody who's been there and done it. As Ghost Hunting has become popular over the last few years, in part, due to the TV shows that seem to be on numerous channels, so many people have started up this "hobby" but have zero experience or guidance. This is now rectified, this book helps people get a little bit of "word of mouth" experience by a seasoned ghost hunter. It's not only interesting, even for myself as someone just as seasoned, but its also witty with some great little stories that bring a wry smile.

Thoroughly recommended to everybody with an interest in the paranormal.
