5.0 out of 5 stars A little-known gem 2 Dec 2007
Format:DVD
I watched this on TV today. I nearly didn't bother, as the Radio Times review gave it only two stars and a derogatory comment about the young co-star Jon Newman. But I was on my own, outdoors it was windy and raining, I had a headache and needed a bit of escapism; so the lure of George Cole and Prunella Scales overcame my magazine-induced scepticism. I think the reviewer may have been watching a different film. As long as you don't want your brain tested by complex plots but just want an enjoyable Christmas ghost story with a small but good cast, this is for you. Adapted from the novel "Down Came a Blackbird" by Nicholas Wilde, and beautifully filmed on location in Gloucestershire, this is a great film for all the family on Christmas Eve. I'm putting my order in now, so the rest of my family can see it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good old-fashioned children's ghost story 3 Dec 2007
Format:DVD
This film is a genuine, easy to watch ghost story which is mildly spooky, but perfectly OK for all the family. It isn't BAFTA material, and the secret behind the ghost will be guessed by most older people, but that doesn't detract from it at all. I enjoyed it, and recommend it as an enjoyable watch for a dull afternoon over the xmas holidays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Day 1939 15 Oct 2012
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The Ghost of Greville Lodge is directed by Niall Johnson, who also adapts to screenplay from the novel Down Came A Blackbird written by Nicholas Wilde. It stars George Cole, Prunella Scales, Kevin Howarth, Jon Newman, Billy Smith and Rebecca Weeks. Music is by Sam Parker and Craig Johnson and cinematography by Gordon Hickie.

Teenager James Greville (Newman) has spent most of his youth living in children's homes after the death of his parents when he was just six years old. Out of the blue he gets an invite to stay for Christmas with a Great Uncle at Greville Lodge. Once there he settles in quickly and spends his time exploring the vast lodge and the quaint village nearby. Soon, though, James comes to find that Greville Lodge holds some secrets and that he is in fact the catalyst for those secrets to come out in the open.

Anyone who is familiar with, and likes, The Amazing Mr. Blunden from 1972, will have no problems enjoying this delightful family friendly ghost story. Blending its supernatural heart with a time travelling scenario, film goes exactly where you would expect it to go. It's not the scary kind of ghost story to chill the spine, though there is an ethereal eeriness about certain passages that should make the younger viewers tingle with a suspicion of the unknown. The acting is very competent and the period design for the 1939 segments is splendid in its eye appealing efficiency. A film of this type lives or dies by its ending and thankfully the finale here is excellently put together and hits all the right emotional notes. So have a Kleenex handy just in case.

Really well put together and narratively strong, this is very much recommended to those in search of a Mr. Blunden type ghost story. 7.5/10

VCI Entertainment presents "THE GHOST OF GREVILLE LODGE" (October 2000 (UK)) (90 min/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- The director Niall Johnson has given us a well directed and layed out story with some of the best actors in the business sharing center stage --- The cast is strong with shades of a classic if it were filmed during the '40s, but it is still worth a view --- Starts out very slow, then builds as all the pieces come together until the final scene which is worth the wait, but the surprise ending keeps you wondering for days --- A veteran cast of Prunella Scales and George Cole, with some newcomers Jon Newman, Rebecca Weeks and Billy Smith who give this a fresh look.

the cast includes:
Jon Newman ... James Greville
Prunella Scales ... Sarah
Marc Danbury ... Social Worker
George Cole ... Great Uncle
Kevin Howarth ... Billyboy
Stephen Lyons ... Radio Announcer
Howard Coggins ... Durban
Billy Smith ... Ben
Christian Rodska ... James' Father
Rebecca Weeks ... Midge

Hats off and thanks to Robert Blair and his staff at VCI Entertainment --- VCI was named in Variety and Hollywood Reporter as the first company to produce and release motion pictures directly to the home marketplace --- order your copy now from Amazon where there are plenty of copies available on DVD, stay tuned once again for top notch releases --- VCI are experts in releasing long forgotten films and treasures to the collector -- looking forward to more Nostalgic Collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable. 1 Nov 2009

I don't see how this film could possibly be bad what with George Cole and Prunella Scales both starring in it and I wasn't wrong.

James is a teenage orphan who finds out from his social worker that he has a Great Uncle who would like him to go and stay with him over the Xmas holidays. As the boy has nothing to lose and possibly everything to gain, he agrees to stay at Greville Lodge. Said lodge, is a decaying but rather beautiful Jacobean building which James notices from the outset looks rather lopsided.........there is of course a reason for this. Anyhow, after a few days he starts to experience dreams or blips in time and goes back to the past when his Uncle was his own age. He befriends the stable boy, Ben and his sister Midge but when his Father learns of this he is outraged, accuses Ben of stealing and tells James he is sending the refugee back to London. Things then move on apace and there is a fire which has devastating consquences for those back in time and also those still living.

The ending is a kind of awakening and a catharsis for both James's uncle and also for Sarah the housekeeper.

A lovely, gentle and emminently watchable film which makes you feel warm inside.

Pleasant little film. Some of the acting is amateurish - looks like they drafted in a local am dram society for some of the bit player parts.
