Product Description

The Ghost of Grania O’Malley is another gripping ghost story from Britain’s best-loved children’s author, Michael Morpurgo. Now available as an ebook.

Everyone knows the Big Hill is full of gold, and now the islanders are intent on cutting the top off it and making themselves rich. Jessie and Jake are determined to save the Big Hill but what can they do? A plan is needed, and fast. Could the ghost of Grania O'Malley, the pirate queen, be the answer? You don’t know what you can do until you try.

Former Children’s Laureate and award-winning author of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo, demonstrates why he is considered to be the master story teller with this enchanting tale.

About the Author

me and Kensuke's Kingdom. Michael has won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children's Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times. He started the charity Farms for City Children in 1976 with his wife, Clare, aimed at relieving the “poverty of experience” many young children feel in inner city and urban areas. Michael is also a patron of over a dozen other charities. Living in Devon, listening to Mozart and working with children have provided Michael with the ideas and incentive to write his stories. He spends half his life mucking out sheds with the children, feeding sheep or milking cows; the other half he spends dreaming up and writing stories for children. "For me, the greater part of writing is daydreaming, dreaming the dream of my story until it hatches out - the writing down of it I always find hard. But I love finishing it, then holding the book in my hand and sharing my dream with my readers." Michael received an OBE in December 2006 for his services to literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story 17 Oct 2000
By A Customer
My children can't get enough of Michael Morpurgo books at the moment and this is the latest in a series that I have read aloud to them. This is the story of Jessie, who with the aid of her cousin Jack and the ghosts of Grania o'Malley and her crew, overcomes her own disability to fight for what she believes in. This is a fast moving story with believable and likeable characters and will appeal to children of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars just 1 word, EXCELLENT 20 Nov 2002
As I read this book I just couldn't get enough of it and I loved Grania o'Malley. when Jessie called out for her I just wished she would turn up and help her through her problems. When Jack first came into the story I didn't like him too much but as the story developed he became my favorite character. When I was reading this book I was dying to find out what happened but as I got towards the end I started to read it slower as I didn't want the book to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jake or Jack 20 Feb 2011
A Kid's Review
The Ghost of Grania O'Malley is entertaining fun book about a girl and her cousin willing to save a hill that contains gold. This is a thrilling story but I think maybe Michael Morpurgo rushed this book or the publisher did not check it properly as the back of the book it describes the boys name as Jake and in the book the boys name is Jack. There is also no one in the book named Jake but all together it is quite good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Morpurgo turns children into readers! 23 Nov 2010
By E. Heckingbottom TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I passed this book to a friend's son two weeks ago - and he has already read it! Previously a reluctant reader, this book had him gripped from the start. he got a lot out of it ... and, almost without realising it, he was learning some of the skills of creative writing at the same time!

I cannot praise this author highly enough. Children (and their parents) start reading his books, and suddenly they are gripped. Before they know it, they have become readers - and are beginnign to learn the necessary skills to turn them into good writers.

This story is amazing. It appeals to all children - with a hero and a heroine, pirates (male and female) ghosts and adventure - what could possibly be missing?

A great addition to the library of any 8 to 11 year old - and a superb stocking filler.
