Product Description

Deluxe CD/DVD edition includes bonus DVD. 2013 release. From the minds of co-conspirators Stephen King, John Mellencamp, and T Bone Burnett comes Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County, a Southern Gothic supernatural musical thriller of fraternal love, lust, jealousy, and revenge. Set in the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi, the Ghost Brothers' story centers on two sets of brothers: the ghosts of Jack and Andy, dead in an apparent murder/suicide, and their nephews, the living Frank and Drake, who seem to be headed toward the same downward spiral as their uncles. Joe, younger brother of Jack and Andy, father of Frank and Drake, has decided it's time to reveal his own terrible secret at the site of the tragedy, before it's too late.

The first time I heard that John Mellencamp was touting this idea I feared he had totally lost the plot. Now that the finished result is here i'm of the opinion that he has indeed very much not only FOUND the plot but reinvented it entirely! I expected this to be bad, full of predictability and tired ideas but expectations are so often shattered and in this case, blown away in a big gust of wind.
Mellencamp has followed a diverse path over the last few years and releases. I haven't enjoyed travelling that path. Having been a fan for 30 years i've felt duty bound to follow wherever he goes but the results have not really been to my taste although I have always held the utmost respect and appreciation of Mellencamp's desire to explore way beyond his comfort zone. After all, it's a sign of a creatively fertile mind and this is an artist who obviously intends to remain creative and has earned the right to go where his creativity takes him.
I can't say i've been a big fan of T Bone Burnett's production style over the last few years. I can see what he's aiming for in this sparse, atmospheric sound but I feel that sometimes he takes it a little too far and the results, whilst authentic, can be a little hard to digest.
The involvement of Stephen King really has no bearing on my interest in this release as I have no interest in his work although his skill at what he does is not in question and his reputation totally intact.
So, to the album in question. I wasn't even aware of this release until noticing it whilst scanning the racks at my local HMV (yes we still have one here). Having remembered hearing about it from a while ago and still wanting to follow wherever Mellencamp goes, I decided to give it a go.

Initially attracted by the involvement of John Mellencamp, but this is not really a Mellencamp album.

There was a lot of scope for this album to go wrong. Various artists, being based on a stage piece that few have seen - and just a tad ambitious.

No need to have worried. The songs are strong and the performances fit together. The album also includes narrative; I deleted this for my ipod version, but the CD works as an integrated piece too.

A great soundtrack put together by Mellencamp and T Bone
featuring Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crowe and other friends
tasteful Americana, country and rock music
the DVD is not the Ghost Brothers film
it is an interesting documentary about it
