Reviews

This superb two disc DVD set tells for the first time the complete and fully authorised story of Rory Gallagher. On disc one Ghost Blues follows Rory s life and career from his upbringing in Cork, his early days with a showband, the brief success of Taste and then his legendary solo career leading up to his health problems in later life and tragic death at the age of just 47. There are archive interviews, both audio and visual, with Rory and contributions from many of his friends and admirers including his brother Donal, Bob Geldof, The Edge, Cameron Crowe, Slash, Johnny Marr, James Dean Bradfield, Ronnie Drew, Bill Wyman, Martin Carthy, band members Ted McKenna and Gerry McAvoy and many more. Disc two The Beat Club Sessions then shows what Rory Gallagher was really all about a magnificent live performer. Drawn from three different appearances on the German TV series Beat Club , this disc contains over 90 minutes of previously unreleased live performances which ably illustrate why he inspired so many of the musicians who pay tribute to him in Ghost Blues .

Hats off to Donal, Ian Thuillier and the team for releasing this excellent product which will delight die-hard Rory fans as well as all lovers of quality blues/rock alike. The documentary is entertaining and informative and holds the viewers attention throughout, with some nice contributions from those who toured and played with the great man.

From a personal perspective it was the prospect of seeing the Beat Club sessions which drew me to make this (advance order) purchase, as a mega enthusiastic Rory fan of some years standing who owns all his released material to date. I was certainly not to be disappointed at any stage. Each of the tracks recorded in the studios in Bremen (some with an audience present) is superbly captured despite the rather distracting camera work from time to time. I believe these to be some of his best ever recorded efforts and for me that represents a high standard indeed! Needless to say, Rory was in his pomp during this period and delivers 100% on a classic set. Buy it just to see "Tore Down" - which is worth the cover price on its own.

In short, buy this DVD now if you appreciate musical genius and sonic craftsmanship, you will not be disappointed. Lift a full glass heaven-wards as you watch and remember this man who put his very soul into his work and who tragically left us far too soon. God bless the Germans for recording and keeping this (the BBC would probably have wiped it!) and God bless Rory for giving us such a musical feast to enjoy.

Three hours on two discs; Disc One is a brand new documentary and tribute to one of the best guitarist of the seventies and all time. A great insight into the man and his life, interviews with Rory and tributes and tales from his brother, colleagues and other artists all proud to have met the man and call him a friend. Disc two is 'The Beat Club Sessions 1971-72', sixteen great tracks from the period.

Even if you have bought every Rory DVD ever released, buy this as there will be great material you haven't seen before and some items that are only spread over clips on the internet all here in one place in top quality. Great value at - buy this now!

This is essential viewing for Rory fans and anyone new to the Rory story.
This is a 5 star review but as with all things Rory, there are some areas which deserve to have been done differently.
Firstly the Rory timeline is done reasonably well but the clips used to highlight the story don't fit in with the narration. A good example is the section about the Strat - You hear some fantastic comments and information about the strat and then it cuts to a shot of the Telecaster! The person I was watching it with didn't know the Rory story and asked me "That's not the guitar they've just been talking about though is it?"
Also the language used during some of the interview is not in keeping with Rory. You can forgive Slash the odd F word and Johnny Marr saying "Rory was the S**t" That's fair enough but why did Bob Geldoff need to say "I was at the Isle of White festival selling Drugs" What an idiot! He shouldn't even be on the DVD let alone be glorifying drug dealing.
anyway.....

Now for the Good stuff!

The documentary has some fantastic old footage which makes your mouth water. Some old Taste interviews that look like they were filmed in HD. Great input from Donal as always, some superb tributes from Mark Feltham, and Ted McKenna and of course Gerry.

But the best thing about this is the Beat Club sessions on DVD.
Read any review on here and they say the same thing. This is worth the cover price alone.
Rory is at his best and gives it everything.
It is difficult to say how good the playing is on these songs, if you are new to Rory then I can promise you have not seen playing like this before. If you are a fan then this is absolute 'Prime' Rory Gallagher.
'Crest of a Wave' and 'Tore Down' and mind blowing.

This is wonderful stuff and it hasnt left the DVD player since arriving.
AMAZING!

What an absolutely marvellous documentary tribute to an equally marvellous musician, well worth watching for fans & non-fans alike. A real insight to his musical talent.

I only 'discovered' Rory Gallagher and his music a few months' ago and have to say that I regret not having made this discovery decades ago...I'm absolutely hooked!!! This DVD has been a valuable addition to my partial collection of Rory material. The film 'Ghost Blues' was first shown on the Irish RTE channel in June 2010 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Rory's premature and tragic death in '95. The biog-doc is informative and shows Rory from his early recording career right up to the last months of his life. My only criticism (and I realise that it's probably not the fault of anyone) is the limited amount of video'd interview material, although the audio-recorded interviews are plenty.

The Beat Club Sessions are fantastic. Three musical geniuses playing their hearts out during a magical period of 2 years' of incredible creativity...are they tight or what?! Pure magic, blinding.

This 2-dvd package is an excellent addition to any Rory fan's collection or a great introduction to this unforgettable man and his music.
