Hats off to Donal, Ian Thuillier and the team for releasing this excellent product which will delight die-hard Rory fans as well as all lovers of quality blues/rock alike. The documentary is entertaining and informative and holds the viewers attention throughout, with some nice contributions from those who toured and played with the great man.
From a personal perspective it was the prospect of seeing the Beat Club sessions which drew me to make this (advance order) purchase, as a mega enthusiastic Rory fan of some years standing who owns all his released material to date. I was certainly not to be disappointed at any stage. Each of the tracks recorded in the studios in Bremen (some with an audience present) is superbly captured despite the rather distracting camera work from time to time. I believe these to be some of his best ever recorded efforts and for me that represents a high standard indeed! Needless to say, Rory was in his pomp during this period and delivers 100% on a classic set. Buy it just to see "Tore Down" - which is worth the cover price on its own.
In short, buy this DVD now if you appreciate musical genius and sonic craftsmanship, you will not be disappointed. Lift a full glass heaven-wards as you watch and remember this man who put his very soul into his work and who tragically left us far too soon. God bless the Germans for recording and keeping this (the BBC would probably have wiped it!) and God bless Rory for giving us such a musical feast to enjoy.
