John Collins raises the highlife bar, even further,
By
This review is from: Ghana Funk from the 70's (Audio CD)
The recent resurgence in the interest of high life music has been driven largely by the excellent Soundway compilations and stellar liner notes of Miles Cleret. However, for deep literature on this incredible form of music, you need to refer to the books of John Collins, professor of music in Ghana. In this compilation, you get the best of worlds, liner notes and musical selections from the man himself. No surprise, then, that the bar for highlife compilations has been raised (even) further.
Readers should note that Hippo Records dot nl have an excellent trailer for the compilation with interviews with John Collins and the great Ambolley. This five minute trailer does a fantastic job of documenting the depth of this music. It's a perfect teaser for the compilation as well, as the last words come from the great Ambolley when he says: "I'm very happy that the real African Ghanaian funk is coming - the *real* one - and that's what we're going to do, by putting it all together". A perfect pitch for a compilation of this quality. As for the runners and riders on this offering, my tip would be expect to get more spaced out than the Soundway Ghana Soundz compilations, as there is definitely a more psychedelic hint to the groovements on this one, and it really works. All the tracks sit in the saddle of a compilation that refuses to be skipped. For picks, Ebo Taylor continues to knock me out as the most outstanding artist to be uncovered across all of these compilations, and `Amponsah' keeps to the rule - insanely addictive, and dangerously hypnotic. Highly recommended, but watch the trailer first and see for yourself why. WP
