Let's be clear - this is not a remake of Memento. I was bored rigid by Memento. No such problem here - this film was inspired by the predicament of the central character from Memento and it takes the idea of a man with short-term memory loss, seeking revenge for the murder on his wife, and makes something completely different of it.
We begin with a monstrous seeming-madman committing acts of extreme violence and then through extended flashback, gradually come to understand what has brought a quiet civillised man to this. Aamir's performances are brilliant, both as the grief-crazed man for whom his terrible loss is always new and as the sophisticated but repressed businessman Sanjay enchanted by a free spirit of a girl Kalpana. And Asin ensures that instead of being irritated by Kalpana, we are as enchanted as Sanjay. Their gently funny yet deep romance is made all the more poignant by the tragic end you know must come, and when it does arrive, you are desperate for Sanjay to achieve his revenge, however violent. The twists of the story make you doubt whether that revenge will be achieved and I was agonised at the several moments when Sanjay finds himself in the midst of this savage quest with no memory as to where he is or what he is doing there.
This film is astonishing in its intensity and, once seen and heard within the context of the story, the song "Kaise Muhje" will haunt you for days to come.
